3.08 gear ration????

Hey guys... I have a 2000 F-150 4.6L manual 2wd...flareside...& the original sticker is in the glove compartment says that is has 3.08 gear ratio.
What the heck is 3.08 good for...I have heard of 3.55...3.73(lightning) ...4.10....
but 3.08....what are the pro's & cons for a 3.08 ratio????

3.08 Is Good For Flying Down The Highway Or Rollin' Around In 3rd Or 4th Gear. 3.08 Brings Your Towing Ability Down As Well As Your Operating Rpm's. 3.08 Is Almost Useless In A Truck. 3.08 Was Common In Older Vehicles W/3 Speed Autos. I Had 3.31 In A Truck And I Thought That Was Bad. I Cant Imagine 3.08 W/overdrive.

The rear gear ratio of 3.08 in a 2000 M/T (which has a 5th gear ratio of 0.8) is actually pretty close to being the same final drive ratio at the wheel as a 2000 A/T (which has a 4th gear ratio of 0.7) with a rear gear ratio of 3.55.

3.08 is good for high end. Acceleration sucks, but if you have the hp, it can help you stretch out your top end speed.

I was thinking about switching to a lower ratio....good idea or bad. It is pretty much a street truck...that's what I want it to be...somewhere in the class of a lightning after putting mods & accessories on, but it won't have all the power an L has. How much would it cost to change ratio's???

Ok, if you switch out your gears, go for at least 4.10's or you will regret it. The only thing is, you will lost out a bit on your optimal transmission gearing, so you will shift at lower speeds and your top end will be cut down. Good thing is, your acceleration will be quicker.

Cost: Depends on if you do it yourself or not. Gears usually cost around $200 and the fluid and seals and whatnot will cost another $50. If you get a shop to do it, it will probably run you around $1500. If you do it yourself or with a mechanically inclined friend, it will cost you quite a bit less, but you have to be careful or you can screw things up.

well, gas mlg will most likley go down....acceleration will go through the roof compared to a 3.08..you will lose some highway high end speeds because your making the gears shorter but in the end it's well worth it.....i couldn't give you a number on how much your gas mlg will drop....a guess would be that it would drop mabey 2mpg or mabey 3 at teh most.....thast just a guess thou
