i was wondering if any one has put in a universal wiring harness and what brand and model. i would like to replace my original but i don't have enough to to buy oem. i have a 64 f-250 w/ a 460 and a c-6. any input would be greatly appreciated. thanx
A few years ago I installed a Ron Francis kit in my '54 Chevy sedan when I V8'ed it. Was very straightforward, and I only had one problem with the steering column wiring - one phone call did the trick and had the correct answer within 10 minutes. They are a bit pricey compared to some others, and they all seem to be pretty much alike in most respects from what I've seen. But I was very satisfied with the RF kit and may go with them again when the time comes.
Purchased wire harnesses for 65 thru Mr. Mustang who makes reproductions for 64-67 Ford trucks. According to price sheet couple years old would cost approx. $275 headlamp harness $86, tail lamp harness $95, gas sending $20, dome $20, and feed to generator harnesses $41. This does not include the instrument/dash harness, have not found anyone who reproduces them.
There is an article in April 04, 'Classic Truck Magazine' on rewiring, although it was on a 'bowtie' truck, good article with referral sources and suggestion. The article was on the 'painless' wire harnesses. The magazine has a tech section on their web page, may still be available to review online. www.classictrucksweb.com
Suggest run a search, topic comes up on occasion. If recall member used Universal wire harness, Painless or simular, and described as realitively easy to install. Heard 'painless' has good support department if run into problems. Their web page only list 66 thru 77 Ford truck, suggest contact them (800) 423-9696 inquire about 64 application if decide to go that route. Web page also has a dealer locater. www.painlessperformance.com
If intend to add accessories in future Universal kit may be the way to go. Was fortunate to find dash/instrument harness in fairly good shape for my 65 so in reconditioning added few extra circuit when rewrapped harness. Very time consuming.
I put a universal harness from painless in my 65. Works like a charm and leaves plenty of room to do custom mods (i.e. power windows doors, power outlet). Was relatively easy to install and should be pretty easy to troubleshoot or add on to in the future.
A good friend of mine used a painless for his 65 dash harness. Said it was a breeze to install and 3 months later added power door locks to it.
Me? I'm debating on redoing the origional harness or going with a painless setup. The previous owner hacked up the origional something fierce, but nothing I can't fix/redo.
If I could find a supplier for the firewall connections I think I'd start making some reproduction harnesses.
If your not going for a correct restoration, the Painless 18ckt universal kit was reasonably priced and easy to install. I have mine in and it only took a day or two to run and terminate all wires.
