My dad just bought a 1996 F-250 and the check engine light was on. It was giving him codes 141, 171, & 174. We checked the fuses inside the truck and all were good. We checked fuses under the hood and found a blown 20A fuse on near the fender on the left hand side. My 95 service manual indicates it is the Radio fuse. My dad's 96 manual doesn't give him a description. Once we replaced it, the 174 code cleared. I know 141 is the code for running too lean as well as 171. I thought it could be the downstream oxygen sensor but wasn't sure. Right now, the temperature gauge isn't working and won't peg out when grounded out. We replaced the temperature sensor but that disn't help. Is there anything else we can try? Also, what could be causing the 141 and 171 to stay on?
Did you clear those stored codes?
Other than that, replace the right side o2 sensor, 174 is slow switching reponse right side and 171 is right side at adaptive limit/unable to switch. Be sure to disconnect the battery for 30 minutes to force the computer to recalibrate for the new sensor.
We cleared the codes after we replaced the fuse. Would the oxygen sensor keep the temperature gauge from working as well? I will check back with him to see if the code comes back. He said it usually takes a couple of days worth of driving to make it come back on. Will keep you posted.
Which temp sensor did you ground, where was it located? The guage sensor is not the one by the thermostat.
If it doesn't peg when grounded, and you have power going in, then the guage is bad.
Are you getting 'some' movement from the guage?
