15 qts factory spec, old fluid dark brown , nothing major just usual magnet pickup wear,111000, mercon III, yes freeway about 60 miles past two days, 1st mech trouble shot it told me all the codes that might be the problem. now today going into work the truck just cut out then came back . coming home from work truck cut out again had to restart
well took it to the dealer they are so smart charging me 82.50 to tell me what i already knew that i had a bad fuel pump they said not enough fuel preasure would make the truck hesitate ( smart guy's ) well never again ill just keep on burning my own money and time till i figure the problem out .............
back to the trans/torq in another post one guy said if the dr tranny didnt work it might be to late what are the specs for an E4OD trans and torq so i can try to find a replacment without buying completly new stuff maybe a reman just spec #'s to cross with
thanks for the help
Stupid question, but if the torque convertor is acting up, can it cause loss of power when accelerating? I think that I have narrowed my shutter down to this, but I feel as if I have a small loss of power.
I usually feel this shudder when I accelerate from a complete stop. It sounds like it could be the tc. I have felt a few other weird feelings when going from say 30-35, but the washboard feeling usually occurs only when accelerating.
There is an easy way to tell if shudder is due to the torque converter clutch slipping.
When she starts shuddering, keep your right foot on the gas and lightly tap the brake pedal with your left foot (don't actually try to brake, just push the pedal down far enough to turn on the brake lights). The computer is programmed to unlock the torque converter when this happens. If the shudder instantly stops, it is very likely to be the torque converter clutch that is slipping. The computer leaves the clutch unlocked for about 5 seconds, then tries to lock it again. So if the shudder comes back in that amount of time, this is further confirmation.
it is not the tp i have replaced all of the important sensors on my 4.9 i am going to pick up a new torque convertor tomorrow [B]fefarms thanks for the test to tell it worked just fine in locating the problem
wish you would let me know how this works out for you, I just bought a 94 f-150 4x4 and have same problem with shudder at speeds above 30 mph under light acceleration I'm lost know very little about automatic trans. and have spent most of my bucks on this truck. I wonder if anyone has heard this one? when the shudder begins if you rest your foot on the brake pedal just enough to light the brake lights the shudder goes away momentarily!
I have a 1990 E350 motorhome with an E4OD. I bought it at 52000 miles and had the fluid changed and a filter installed (so they said anyway) and they did about half the fluid with Mobil 1 ATF (so they said anyway). At around 72000 I drained 12 of the 16 quarts and refilled with Mobil 1 ATF. Anyway now it has 87000 miles and a shudder developed the other day taking off in first gear, like going over a washboard. Doesn't do it if I take off very gently and slowly. So I was figuring the tranny is history, but reading this thread I think I need a fluid and filter change ASAP.
It is important that I figure out if this is major or not because I am about to sink a bit of money and work into this motorhome to fix it up and if the tranny is shot, I'll just trade it in on a newer one.
For those who are experiencing shudder in the trans, try Dr. Tranny's Instant Shudder Fixx. from Lubegard. They weren't kidding when they named it Instant shudder fix it usually works rightaway. best 5 bucks I ever spent.
The "shudder" that most of this thread discusses is slippage of the lockup torque converter clutch. Due to the programming of the PCM, torque converter lockup can only happen in 3rd and 4th gear and at relatively light throttle pressures. While annoying, it is generally not the kind of serious issue that could leave you stranded.
Any shakes or shudders felt at low speeds or when starting up from a dead stop is some other issue with the trans. This sort of a problem is more serious, and could be indicative of more serious internal wear/damage.
