91 Explorer 4x4

I recently accuired a 91 Explorer 4x4 with push button lock in. When I press the button I can hear (a solenoid?) clicking but it doesnt engage everytime. I have only had the 4x4 work one time. I have no idea where to start on this. I am used to the manual hubs and cant seem to find anything about this problem.

There should be a solenoid on the t-case that engages it that could be bad, if you post this in the ranger or explorer forum you should get some better replies as this tends to be a common problem i believe.

ok, put on some old clothes and go out and crawl under your SUV. look on the back of the t-case and there will be a small motor.... looks a lot like a windshield wiper motor. pull it off and CLEAN it. get some brake cleaner thats safe for use on electric parts and squirt it. clean the contacts with some emory cloth. also check all your wires to make sure there are no lose connections. this is the first place to start b/c the synchro motor goes out more often than fuses.... they are horrible! e-bay always has them for sale

that'll get ya started
