My 2002 explorer sometimes engages the 4x4 high system when I start it. It also has engaged the 4x4 high system, while driving. If I press the 4x4 auto button, the 4x4 high light goes out and the explorer does disengage the 4x4 high system, but like I said it has a mind of it's own.
I've also noticed a howling sound, from underneath the vehicle, when I turn 90Deg, after I've disengaged the 4x4 high, by pressing the 4x4 auto button.
From where I park the vehicle, I have two turns within 100yds. After the second turn the howling is not present.
With your 2002 Explorer you should still have warranty left on it. Just take it to Ford and tell them what it is doing, maybe it is just or a bad switch or some sort of sensor gone.
Good advice, I took it in the same day I first posted. Got it back two days later with a new 4X4 control module installed. The dealer said that it was electronically the same part as the one that went bad, so it sounds like the problem was a vendor quality problem rather than a Ford engineering problem.
I have the same problem with my 4x4 2002 explorer...I cant get the problem to reproduce for the deal, it is intermittent for some reason - I am 95% sure it is the 4wd control module, but I cant get them to replace it under warranty unless they see all the crazy unexplainable **** its doing (mine also has a mind of its own). It loves to run perfectly whenever its at the dealer. Does anyone have any suggestions??? Ive called ford customer support and everything. Should I find a control module from some other source??
