We have a 1991 Ford Explorer, 5 speed manual transmission with a push button 4x4. We bought the vehicle second hand and have no owners manual. Does anyone know how and when we can turn the 4x4 on? We're getting conflicting views, even from dealers. Some say we have to be stationary and out of gear, some say we can be doing under 60 kms and just push the button. Are there any other '91 owners out there that knows?!
Help!
hey I got a 93 explorer the owners manual says up to 55 mph but really I would never do that maybe new but not when they get old to much to break now I have kicked mine in 10 mph and less off the throttle worked fine now to put it in low you have to be stopped and in nutreal I belive I don't use low much also when you unlock it you need to back up ten feet if you engaged it going forward vice versisa if you engaged going backward I have owned mine 5 years now no problems with the 4x4 but I use it for what it was intended for a daily driver not a mudd truck the front auto lock outs are weak for heavy duty stuff
For starters, never drive in 4wd on dry pavement, but i'm pretty sure you can be driving 45mph and below and push the button. You must be in park/neutral and stopped with your foot on the brake to put it in low range. Check Ebay for owner's manuals.
First let me apologize i am clueless to how to pick a thread....so i replied...I have a 2000 Ford Ranger SLT on the dash there is a button that switches from 2x2(i think) to 4x4low and 4x4high. I could swear that when it was in 2x2 that a red flash came up on the dash and then disappeared also happened when i would turn my truck on... If I put it in either of the 4x4s the light stays on and is yellow..I had to put it in 4x4 the other day to back out and after I was out I put my foot on the brake put it in neutral and switched the button to 2x2..but I got no red light now...i have been putting it through all the switches backed up foot on the break switched again backed up...etc.etc...now it kind of feels like it's driving harder...is it all in my head or am i in 4x4something still with no yellow or red dash lights?
When you change from 4x2 (your truck always has 4 wheels on the ground, so it's never 2x2 ) to 4x4 or back, you have to change direction for about 10' to unlock the automatic hubs. If you've backed up more than 10' and then driven forward more than 10' since the last time you switched to 2Hi, you're totally unlocked UNLESS you have a hub malfunction (which is common with 1/2-ton auto hubs).
