i have a 93 f-250. it is fuel injected and was wondering if it had knock sensor. i'm about to start on a new motor for it (187,000 miles, a little down on power with 36" swampers) and i'm thinking of running a gear drive instead of a plain ol timing chain. the reason i asked for the knock sensor is they say not to run a gear drive with a knock sensor. another question is do i have a roller cam? i don't think i do but just wanting to make sure before i buy one. its not mass air, and i think roller cams came with mass air equipped motors only. correct me if i'm wrong. what would be a good cam choice for a 4x4. i want something with low duration and a little bit of lift. thanks.
well you didnt say what motor you have but im assuming its a 5.8. so NO it wont have a knock sensor and yes it should be a roller cam motor. I highly suggest you do not use the geardrive . they transmit a lot of harmonics thru the upper engine and wear things out faster. a good double roller timing chain will probably out live your use of this truck. since your running 36"tires whats your gear ratio? you should be at 4.56 or 4.88 front/rear if not thats more your issue. being undergeared will affect a new motor to and decrease its life
You can take a look at my engine project for ideas...if your trying to build cheap, you can get some good results when ya know the tricks. Mine wasn't a budget build but with all the details it cost me about $7000-$8000 when it was all done.
About the cam, call Comp Cams or Crane...and ask them for their recommendation. They have all the info to give you the answer after some questions about your truck project.
Nows the time to do any performance mods to the motor...so do them now and take care of everything as best you can so you won't ever have to worry or deal with problems later on.

yeah its a 351W. how can i tell for sure that its a roller cam besides taking of the intake and looking at the lifter? i have the factory 4.10's. i planned on changing them but i can't seem to find anything for a dana 50 ttb front axle. i am gonna go with 37" all terrains. would 4.56's be alright with 37's or go ahead with the 4.88's. it is a 5-speed by the way. i only plan to turn the motor a max of 4500-5000 rpm. so a geardrive still wouldn't be a good idea?

the setup you have is what i had been thinking about. i can get a 393,408, or 427 rotating assembly for 800 not counting the balancing with cast crank, stock type rods and forged pistons. i have come across a set of fresh aluminum gt-40 heads for cheap as well as longtube headers. i have a set of roller rockers and roller lifters. did you go with a bigger throttle body? i plan on going with a supercharger but i don't know what brand would be best. powerdyne has one at a good price. any suggestions?
Honestly, you're better off not putting money into a supercharger, when you can put it into the engine and get the same or likely better results. Last time I checked those are about $2500-$3500 depending on what you get. I know the Kenne Bell is the better one for a heavy truck like these, but those run $3200-$3500.
You could build a great motor for $2500-$3000. I myself prefer naturally aspirated power. Superchargers are great and all, but you only have that power when under max boost, the naturally aspirated engine is more powerful all around when similarly setup.
Rollin, 4.88 would minimum in your situation. if you could run a 5.13 that would be even better especially since you have a 5speed. im gonna go 4.88 for my bronco running either 35's or 36's and i have an OD tranny as well. better to have to much gear then not enough. its to expensive to keep working on gears. check out customoffroad.com for gear package prices. they should get you set up
