They do that for cooling reasons. It apparently makes the belt last longer when it runs cooler.
The belt company's say they run cooler and are more flexable but I have to wonder if it's all about cost. Those belts look to have about 1/4 less rubber in them. These people count pennies, because $.02 times a zillion is, well, a lot. Maybe I'm just paranoid but why would they want to make a belt that lasts longer?

That may be true, but what are you going ot do? Go on a search for the .02 cheaper belt?I doubt it. Just for comparisons sake, those belts (in my experience) have actually been a litle thicker, almost like they put the extra ribs on top of the old belt.

What I meant was if Gates or any large company can save .02 on their product it will amount to millions of dollars. I just wondered if those notches were to benefit us or them. Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean their not out to get us.
I think Doc is describing what Merc546 illustrates in the photos. I had not considered an idler pulley. But that seems to be the answer. If I can find a three groove crank pulley, and an idler pulley to match, then I'm going to set it up just like the photos. Btw, I installed the old belt on the alternator that bypasses the A/C. The alternator works great at 14v. Thanks everybody, I'll see what I can find this weekend. Jag

Just an update on my progress. I have decided to go to a 3-groove crank pulley for my '67 289. I went to Pull-a-Part and found the idler pulley and bracket. So I will be able to have the A/C comp on its own belt. Thanks again for the help, Jag
Jag,
Thanks for the update. I've been pretty curious as to how you were coming on it. It works a lot better to get a complete set of brackets and pulleys so that everything lines up better, but you may get lucky. If I'm understanding correctly, The A/C, P/S, and alternator will all have their own seperate belt now, correct?
If there is any thing else I can do, just let me know.
Doc
Yes Doc, you are correct. Each will have its own belt. We're gonna be stylin'! Just like the big city. If you happen to run across a 3-groove, 3-hole pulley for a 289 just let me know. I'll be on it quicker than a starvin' dog on a soup bone. Jag
Did you say a 3 hole pulley with 3 grooves???
Man, that's going to be a tough one to locate.
I think I may know of a bone yard that has one, but it's going to be a couple of days before I can get over there to avtualy get a visual.
You may be better off to swap to a later model 302 hormonic balancer that will allow you to bolt up a 4 hole pulley. I'd do some reserach before you actualy try it and make sure it's not going to create other problems.
I'll let you know if I find that 3 hole that your looking for. I'm usualy pretty good at scrounging up old parts, but this one is going to be a real challange.
Doc
Doc, you are right, these things are scarce. My buddy, the retired Ford mechanic, has a large box of Ford pulleys just for such situations. We looked at about a dozen and none fit. I've looked at several recycle yards and found only 4-bolt pulleys. I too thought about changing the harmonic balancer, but am afraid that would open up a wholenuthercanaworms. I might have found the right pulley from the local Mustang recycler. He's having it delivered to his shop today. Supposed to be what I need.. well for $35 it better be! If you find one of these please get it. I will be more than happy to pay you for it and your time. I have several buddies who have not changed over to A/C yet, but when they do, I think that they will be in the same boat as me. Thanks, Jag
35 bucks?
Man that's steep. I gave 50 for a complete set of brackets and pulleys for a 460. I had enough stuff there to bolt on my alternator, P/S pump, and A/C compressor. The front of my motor looks just like it rolled out of the factory with this set up. I bet I can do better than 35. I have a food friend at a local U pull it that has piles of old Ford pulleys in the back of his work shop on a shelf. They probably have a 1/2" of dust on them from sitting so long. How many of those pulleys do you want?
Also, do you by chance have the exact part number that you want, or do you just want any small block, 3 groove, 3 hole pulley? Let me know and I'll be on my way.
I can't get over that 35 bucks for one pulley. I bet for 35, I can buy it, clean it, paint it,ship it, and still make money. It's interesting how much these parts go up, when their old.
Doc
Doc, I agree, $35 is way too high! The two-groove crank pulley that I have tells me the deminsions that I will need for the new three-groove. Sorry, no correct part number known yet. When I set my pulley on the workbench, the measurement from the bottom of the first groove to the table is 1.75" (set back). The three bolt holes are evenly spaced at 2-7/8" center to center. And the center hole is 2-1/8" across. Note: there is a raised ring on the back of the pulley that is 1/8" high. Without this ring, the measurement for the setback (1-3/4") would be off. I only need one pulley and I am only concerned that it be straight. I can prep and paint with the best of them, (that's the only fun part) so please, if you can find me one that matches those deminsions I would appreciate it. Just tell me What's fair and I'll send you a MO. Thanks, Jag
Jag, I'm not a Ford guru or anything....but I'm pretty sure that's a mustang number. Do you have any measurements or any thing. I don't mind a bit helping you and your friends out, but I know I hate to recieve parts that don't fit. I don't want to do the same to you.
