Thanks Bobby, you are right, they have one of those on sale at Harbor Freight tools for $19.99 this week! I think that I will go ahead and get one. I;ll call it a late Father's Day gift.

Ax, the power lead is currently connected to the power side of the solenoid. That is where the power wires for the rest of the truck are hooked up also. It seemed like a prime spot considering the #3 wire from the + side of the battery is hooked to it. I have a pigtail as you describe that I will run the temp line to. Keep your fingers crossed. Jag

Thanks, Another nice site for info. It makes me wonder if I should have stayed stock.....Oh well, I guess it's too late now.

I've got good news and bad. I figured out that the alternator IS working correctly! (14v at 2000 rpm) The bad news is that the reason I was having trouble all this time is that the belt is slipping on the pulley and thus the alternator is not spinning at full speed. This is why the pulley was hot. I replaced the worn-shiney belt and it helped alot. Unfortunately the belt is still slipping and the pully is monster hot (Hotter than the exhaust +/-). The belt fits the pulley as Ax described. But the pulley is a new shiny dude. So, I scuffed up the inside with 400 grit sand paper to get off the shine. Still slips. I tightened the belt until the thing is taught, with almost no play. The belt is configured on four pullies. 1) crank, 2) water pump 3) A/C, 4) alternator. I would estimate that the alt pulley is only in contact with the belt for 140 degress of rotation. So any suggestions? I'm concerned that if I overtighten the belt, then the side stress will wear out the water pump. Has anybody else had a problem with slipping belts? Thanks, Jag

Just thinking outloud, shouldn't the AC be on a seperate pully. The belt for AC is usually a lot bigger belt than a alt. belt... Mine is, alt.+crank+water pump. Then, AC+crank+ water pump.

there is only one belt for all the accessories? I think what xfordman says is correct you might need to split things up a bit.

The AC compressor is the one you really have to be careful with. Could scuff the pulley with something courser than 400, say 180, and sand across the groove not around it. you may need to look at a different mount location (I'm trying to picture the belt path of a V belt to go around those 4 pulleys usually they go around 3 per belt) or even an idler pulley or serpentine setup to get more contact. A V belt should have only a small amount of give when you press hard on the center of the longest span.

Jag,
Can you post a pic of your current set-up?

On my 71 351W I have 3 crank pulleys. The first one is the smallest with #2 being approx 2 inches larger in dia then the first and the 3rd being approx 3/4 larger in dia then the 2nd.

On the 1st pulley (closest to the engine) I have the crank,w/p & p/s on #2 it's the crank & alt (alt pivots for adjustment) and on the 3rd it's crank,a/c tension adjuster and a/c.

This is of coarse is "V" belts. It sounds like yours is set up like a serpentine.

If it is possible I think you really need to get the alt on it's own pulley then I bet the slipping will go away.

I have a similar problem on my 67 mustang with a 1-wire chrome unit. But it has JUST the crank pully and the alt pully. I put on an electric waterpump drive. So no slippage on mine......I'm checking the other stuff here and will see if I can get it fixed....Old vehicles....Gotta love em.

I used some stuff called ''belt dressing'' on a slipping pulley as I was getting ready to go to the SR Nats, it worked so well that I never changed it out. Same set up is still on the car. I used to spray it about twice a year, I think it came from NAPA.

I will try and get a good picture of this belt set up. My engine is a 67 289 out of a Mustang. The second belt is W/P, Crank, P/S. It works great and lines up just right. The first belt, because of the way the pulleys line up is Alt, crank, W/P and A/C. The alternator is in the stock location on the pass side and, short of finding a custom mount, is fixed at the same alignment as the first groove on the w/p and crank pulley. However, the A/C is mounted on an aftermarket mount that is adjustable. So the idea of going with a third row on the crank is interesting. However, I will have to checkto see if there is clearance and if the alignment seems right. I do knwo a yard where I can pick up a 3-groov crank pulley for about $25. Thanks for all the feedback guys, Jag

Hmmm... the waterpump pulley has two grooves? Can't say I ever remember seeing an installation where the WP was driven by two belts. My good friend had a 67 Mustang with a HO 289 that I tuned for dragracing for him, so I'm surprised that I wouldn't remember an unusual setup like that.

LOL, my 460 water pump has 3 grooves. Is that unusual as well? I hope so, cuz I LIKE to be unique.

Mine also has three grooves. The third one goes to the power steering pump...
