I do love my new '05 f250 cc fx4, but had to part with my '02 f250 7.3 for the trade-in. It had 63000 problem free miles and plenty of trips towing my 11000# 5vr. The 6.0 has just over 1000 miles on it and carried it's first load today, about 1000# of drywall up a 2 mile 8% grade. This truck has nowhere near the grunt of my old truck. Unloaded I did notice I needed to put a litle more foot into it, but with the load, I needed to floor it to maintain 60 mph. It was pushing 20+ psi of boost!
Also, my old truck got a consistant 18.5 mpg from day one and this one gets 15 with the same driving habits. What a shame the 7.3 is gone.
only 63K miles on your old truck..the motor was just starting to wake up. From what i've experienced and heard..the ole 7.3L turbo would last 300,000+ miles with basic maintance.
I do know what ya mean about the difference in power from the 6.0L and the 7.3L..My brother has a 7.3L in his 03 and my other brother has a 6.0L in his 04..BIG DIFFERENCE!!

Hoping things get better, Tom
Congrats on the new truck! Something must be wrong with it though, take it to the dealer and see what's up. The 7.3 makes 250 HP and 525 ft/lbs torque. The 05, 6.0 makes 325 HP and 570 ft/lbs torque. I have a 04 PSD, no problems and it pulls like a 12 legged mule. I test drove two 7.3 way back when and though it was a very stout engine, I felt the difference when I test drove a 03 6.0 PSD. Good luck with your truck, their fine peices of machinery, from time to time you may get one with some issues. Since Ford sells more trucks than anyone, there are bound to be more issues. Enjoy the truck!
I'm with Stuck, why would you part with a perfectly good '02 with such low mileage? Now if your having trouble going 60mph on just about any grade with only a 1000# of payload, you're either trolling or you have a serious problem with your truck. With a 1000# payload any stock 6.0 would be able to do 98mph up an 8% grade indefinately. I've had just over 4000# of lead bars in the back of my '04 stock PSD dually and I forgot it was even back there. So if your serious, that truck needs to make a dealer visit, and the sooner the better.
Thanks for the encouragement. I only changed trucks because the other one was 2wd and I'm going to the desert more. I was hoping to put 300K on it but got stuck a few times in soft sand, so a 4wd was in order.
I don't thing there is anything wrong with my truck, just not the same torque curve as before. This one really needs to be up on the boost to start making real power. Kinda feels like a strong gasser to me. The 7.3 will pull hard at 1800 rpms, the 6 has to be up a bit more. Because of this, I believe fuel economy suffers. Just my observations.
Tom
Also, I've learned a long time ago that numbers ie hp\tq do not mean much, to me at least. I've worked on/owned everything from weedeaters to aircraft and it depends on who tests, how tested, what equipment, barometric pressure, etc. It's about like apples to oranges. The 6.0 makes that 325 at 3300r's. Wow, I think the 7.3 redlines about there. I'm not saying the numbers are wrong, just different.
Well, I think something must be wrong with your new truck and I can speak from experience in comparing 7.3L and 6.0L :
I traded a 2000 7.3L F350 (GREAT truck but up in the high miles bracket...however, trouble-free less one water pump) for my 05 6.0L F350. Pulling as much as a 4-horse trailer with a big load in the bed with both trucks...stock...my 6.0L will dance nimbly around the 7.3L and can leave it in the dust. Power to burn. Better fuel mileage, too.
Have your new truck checked out and good luck with it!
I am not trying to compare the 7.3 with the 6.0, because frankly, had my '04 come with a 7.3 instead of the 6.0, I'd be just as happy. But there is definately something wrong with a 6.0 if it has problems doing 60mph up an 8% grade with a 1000# load.
I've never owned a 7.3 so I am no authority on the difference between the two however, it does make sense that the 6.0, being a smaller displacement engine, would have a different shifting strategy to compensate (along with other electronic and performance mods in the engine). It also seems that the 6.0 might have a tighter tolerance and a longer breakin period??? Maybe a little time is in order before locking in on opinion regarding the fuel economy. Mine started out with about 15.5 mpg, and is now up to 16.5 with 15000 miles. Better on flat straight highways, possibly around 18 (I don't have any of those flat Hwys around here so it's hard to calc that one).
I have heard that the 7.3 was a great and reliable engine with lots of raw umph, but the 6.0 seems to accomplish the performance and work expectations with finess IMHO.
My 04 6.0 completely stock has more getup and go than my brothers chiped 03,7.3. I get 16 mpg city driving and 18 mpg hwy (85mph). The only problem I have is when pulling my 26' tt is keeping it below 75 mph, I hoping I can get a little better gas milage if I will start running it about 65 mph when towing.
Also your gas milage will suffer going from a 2 wd to a 4 wd.
If your sd is like my it just keep getting better with age/milage
I don't know how anybody can do anything but love these trucks. They are without a doubt the best thing going
i also agree there must be something wrong with you new truck. i have a '01 7.3 with 57,000 on it and stock for stock the 6.0 has quite a bit more power. your '05 should out perform you '02 (providing the '02 was stock) hands down
My 2005 6.0 psd will run circles around my 1997 7.3 psd. The 6.0 is so much more refined. The 7.3 never got any better than 15 mpg. The 6.0 is getting 16.9 mpg. These are both average 30% hwy 30% city and 40% country roads. For me switching to the 6.0 has been the best thing. I would take your truck in and have it checked out by your by a tech.
I have to agree with you the 6.0 is fine when empty, but you hook up something to it and the 7.3 has much more grunt,at least mine did and also got better mpgs. I made the same mistake as you traded a good 7.3 for the 6.0. Good luck with your new truck maybe it will get better.
You are right about the difference in where the two engines build their torque. I also had a 02' F-250 7.3 4x4. I did have a Super Chips 60/80hp on it before I traded it out for the 70/90/110 tuner. It took some getting used to, but I do like my 05' 6.0 better than my 02'. The 7.3 pulled a lot harder when taking off. Part of this has to do with the longer turbo lag the 6.0 has. The 7.3 had turbo lag but nowhere near what my 6.0 does; Although, the lag was greatly reduced with after-market exhaust and the disabling of the EGR.
In overview, my 7.3 had better gas mileage and low end pulling power, but once I get the boost pressure up on the 6.0 it will pull circles around the 7.3. Also, when racing my 7.3, it was nowhere near as fast as my 6.0. The 6.0, with nothing but a tuner, is capable of defeating Firebird’s, Formula T/A’s, and Mustang GT’s from zero too the speed limiter. I would say, if you give it time, you will enjoy your 6.0 more than your 7.3. Good luck with it.
