Ok prior to 1986 Ford put Externally Regulated Alternators on their vehicles. and unless a previous owner changed the alternator to a internally regulated you have a 99.9% chance that your is external regulator. The regulator its self is located on the drivers side of the vehicle, and it is on the fender well about 6 in from the windshield reservoir the voltage regulator is in a Aluminum case and it about 3 in tall and 4 in wide and about 1.5 in deep. Also it should have 4 wires coming out of the bottom
cant find the voltage regulator on the inside panel. There isnt much there other than the solenoid and some fusible links so it should have been obvious. That probably means my model has it on the alternator. Which im not happy about.
However now for the strange and unexplained... the beast has sat for two days no charger nothing changed. I started inspecting the cables again off the negative terminal just to make sure they are all in good shape and well connected. The I have three coming off, the main to the engine / body ground, the one to the radiator and a blue one to a fusible link that then runs into a bundle of wires. Anyone know what this one is?? reconnected it, and it appears a bit worn..
Beast started right up no problems no nothing. let it run about five minutes cut it off...started right back up. Im going to replace the ground wires completely but would love to know what the blue one is
Thanks for that info, i was way off base. they info i had was passenger side fender wall. mine is a 1988 so i guess its plausible that it could be on the alternator as well
I was tagging onto an existing thread the first guy had the 85... it was just weird cause we had the same exact problem, so i didnt open a new thread just continued the one that was there.
