Tight Turn Chatter

Today while I was making a sharp, but slow U turn, I noticed when I had my front wheels turned all the way, I felt thru the steering wheel a small vibration..kinda like the wheels were gripping the pavement to tightly and this would inturn make the steering wheel move a little bit..It does this "chatter" either way I turn the X...I have an 02 X with 27k...

Any thoughts on what this could be would be appreciated...

Could your hubs be locked? I did this a few weeks ago and it was doing the same thing.

My Hubs are in the "auto" mode and not in 4 wheel drive...

Mine has free and lock. Some guys with auto say that you can get damage to your 4 wheel if you leave it in auto.

The hubs on my 01 have only an auto and locked setting. I just had them replaced at 110k becuase they had corroded so badly they they would not release after using 4x4. The symptoms were identical to yours Big Rig, chattering and binding during tight turns. According the the dealer, the winters here in nothern Ohio along with the salt and mag-chloride used on the roads cause the corosion. Poor seals on the factory units are the source of the problem.

In 12/04 I had the ft Hubs replaced under wtty as I couldn't turn them manually. I too lived in MI for the first 2 years I owned the Ex and down here in KY, there is not that much salt on the roads...I can still turn the hubs back and forth manually...I hope they are not bad again as I am out of the 3 yr wtty at this point...
