what was the outside air temp like when this happened, and was the AC working well, or do you have to run at high fan constantly to get a little bit of relief?
I had that problem a while back and could not figure it out for the life of me. I found out that sometimes I have to wiggle the key forward to make it click on. If it happens again try and wiggle the key and see what happens.
Are you saying that when the AC "wasn't working" do you mean that there was absolutely no fan action or it was blowing warm?
I wonder if you have replaced the compressor or ever had a major leak/failure and had the system apart? There may be contamination in the system and the orifice tube is clogging up. Reworked or retrofitted AC systems need a very good flush after a major failure and precautions should be taken to keep dirt out of the lines.
One especially nasty contaminant would be water, this causes problems like yours also. Is the system R12 or 134a refrigerant?
