Thanks for setting it straight Hank and I appolgize RC for giving you static over it all . Its been awhile since I was under a newer than 92 model and I could have sworn they still used the speedo cable and gear set up . Ill do my homework better next time before I dive in too deep . Oh Hank ..I have a Mazda 5 spd in my truck w 158K miles on it and other than fixing some leaks here and there , its done its job w/o laying down . The slave valve died about 130K miles . I have always used Mobil 1 Syn tranny fluid in it and the transfer case .I think its a noisy gear box but it has done better than the E4OD 's .
I agree R.C. I like to drive the 5-speed also. I have heard different stories about the quality of the 5-speed being low. I haven't had any problems yet, but a co-worker of mine did this summer. He has a 89 150 4x4 and tows a trailer with surge brakes. One day he was going to back the trailer and forgot to release the surge brakes on the trailer. It broke some sort of part in the transmission. Anyhow, he lost 5th and reverse. It would have seemed that the truck would have stalled or the clutch would have slipped. I use mine for light towing and the ratios are a pain! Quick question...did the rear gear swap help the high geared reverse any?? I usually can't completely release my clutch while in reverse because the truck will either stall or take off going 10 mph backwards. The first is too high of a ratio for towing also. However, after you are on the highway I would prefer the 5-speed Mazda to the 4-speed automatic because of the closer ratios and consequent better road speed. Did you notice a great "seat of the pants" improvement?? Does it pull hills better?? More get up and go?? Let me know.

well hank, i can say this, when i picked up my truck from getting the gear swap, i thought i picked up the wrong truck. i didn't realize that my truck would benefit that much from a gear swap. it was a seat of the pants feel. reverse is much lower, and as far as 1st goes, i usually try to shift my truck by 2000 rpms under normal driving, when i shift out of 1st, i am probably going about 5-10 miles per hour, low, but bearable, and it helps out when you are towing, a lot better than that ole' 3.08. in the quarter, i use to use all of third to hit the traps at the end, but now i am using all of 4th also now through the traps. it benefitted greatly, also, i just installed bassani headers and offroad Y-pipe, and it was a big horsepower increase, truly worth money, both of them. let me know if you need to know more, take care.
