Hey folks. I have an 82 F100 300 6 with manual 3speed & OD. The problem (actually just annoying)is that the truck 'chatters' when I let the clutch out from a stop. You can really feel, see, and hear it in the dash. The last time I needed to replace the clutch I even had the fly wheel cut. This didn't solve the problem. I also repaired the linkages because they were worn. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make my clutch engagement smooth? Thanks.
John ,
Maybe one of the springs on the clutch disc itself ? I did the same as you , resurfaced the flywheel along w new pressure plate /slave valve , TO bearing and pilot bearing . Mine doesnt chatter too bad ....it seems to be a common problem , Ive seen it on all makes and models w original clutches and replacements ones . How many miles on the clutch ? It may be time for a new one ?
The transmission was just taken out the other week to be fixed (minor problem). So a new clutch disk was put in, and the old one wasn't bad at all. I've seen the clashing spring problem before. Even taken bits and pieces out when installing a new clutch. Some times it will chatter, and some times it won't. Could the disk not be engaging evenly?? I guess I just have to live with it.
John ,
As long as you lined the disc up w a pilot shaft and all is clean and dry , Its hard to say . Im wondering if even resurfacing the flywheel is worth the bother . Ive heard from older mechanics that as long as it wasnt scored , they didnt resurface them . I assume you replaced the pressure plate w the new clutch ?
I have the same with my 88 F150,4.9, 4 spd. man w/ low 1st w/o OD.It's hit & miss, depending on "how" I take off aslo.In damp conditions, it's perfect, in dry, it can happen if I'm not paying attention to the relationship between throttle & clutch pedal. Here is the problems that chattering over the years caused; (1)busted motor mounts (2)loose pinion yoke (3)slack in leaf spring mounting bracket/bolt.Also, for trucks with 2 piece drive shafts, the slip yoke in the rear shaft as well as the splined section of the front can have plenty of slack in it,causing even more chattering, and also, worn out rubber in the hanger bearing.Check these area's also and after fixing them, you'll just have to live with it until, possibly, you swap to a brand new flywheel, not a resurfaced one(for some reason, this has solved other peoples prob's with FORD's).

Yes, I agree that from the fly wheel back, all components should have a limited amount of play. My truck has about 150k on it, but most of those miles have been rough ones. So, I believe there are multiple minor problems with my drive train that cause the chattering. I will just concentrate on the rpm/engagement ratio as I let the clutch out to minimize the amount of chattering. Thanks for your input guys.
