my question is how do you ford boys like that E4OD tranny.
im having a shifting problem my over drive lite goes on real dime and the truck wont **** on its own but if i **** it manualy it will only give me two gears drive and 2nd gear could this mean i could have some internal cluch problem.
aney help would be great thanks in advance.
and if that e40d tranny is junk what about a C6 tranny
The E4OD is not the greatest trans. You could be having trans problems or problems with one or more sensors. You have a FIPL (TPS), a tach sensor and a speed sensor to start with. You will have to read the codes to check the sensors. Take it to a shop if you can't find anyone else to help. There were factory improvements to the trans about 1995. If you need a rebuild, make sure you get all the improvements and heavy duty TC, valve body and springs. You can get aftermarket TCs that are very strong, if you tow etc. Do a search on the trans in this forum. Good luck with it.
There is NOTHING wrong with the E40D trans if you look after it.
Now to your problem..this info from Travis on TDS
Hold the phone... I just ran into this problem...
Pull the TECA POWER RELAY, (Transmission Electronic Control Assembly) this is the relay that supplies power to the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). That relay is toast. It's located on the drivers side fender well just behind the windshield washer fuild reservoiur.
I made a post about this about 2 months back or so, what caught my eye was the DIM OD LIGHT and LOSS OF GEARS. Yank that relay and clean the plug, toss relay over shoulder install new one. If you have the trailer tow relay you can put it in place of the TECA PWR Relay, the relays are the same.
thanks everone.
now how much is this new relay gunna cost me and where can i get it.
one more thing my tranny only acts up when it gets worm could this have somthing to do with the banks trans command i put on about 2 months the tranny only started to give me troubel wen i got the truck real hot pulling a loaded traller could that of bin the cause the problem?
thanks again everone.
First make sure you have it, different years of trucks have to many differences...
I read your first post again are you getting 2 gears or just reverse and 2nd if so that would be LIMP MODE and it is the E40D protective shift/gears which activates when there is a problem with a sensor/PCM.
Do the tach and speedo work ok.....when was the last time the FIPL was checked or does the Banks have settings????
the tech does not work since the tranny started to act up but speedo still works fine It feels like im getting 2nd gear and 3rd nothing else and reverse works fine.the filp switch was replaced over two years ago or longer if that switch is burnt out would that couse me to loose my tach and make the truck not wonna shift?

Check the tach sensor on the front oil filler/timing gear cover.....
The dead tach should send the trans into a "failure management mode" (limp mode) with harsh engagements and firm shift feel, and an abnormal shift schedule.
Replace the tach sender on the oil fill housing a big 1" nut with 2 wires. Ford only part Engine RPM sensor E5TZ-17B384-A about $50. You can remove and clean it but usually changed later too. You can test it too, hold it in the air away from ferrous metal, using an ohm meter lead on each wire you need DC resistance between 2000-3000 ohms.
Please do us all a favor.....put some truck info in your signature. Go to quick links and edit a signature with year , cab type, 2x4-4x4 etc etc...
From what I'm hearing the E4OD pretty much is a turd, but a lot of the problems seem to be sensor related, my erratic shifting was due to a bad TPS, which was an inexpensive fix.
That exact thing happened to me just the other day. Check your fuses and check the wiring where its connected at the solenoid on the pass.side fender. I had been working on my truck and forgot to put that wire back on. I believe that their is a fuse that could blow and cause the same problem.
Hope this helps and saves you money, Jeremy
if the tach dont work thr tranny wont work it reads all the sensors and if one is now working it wont shift you only have reverse and second if you have shifter in 2 and 3 rd if it is in first or od figure out why the tach isnt working problably the sensor on the front of engine on top of timing cover and that should fix your problem
i went to for and bot a new rpm sensor and new filp switch and still no luck i even checked the netural safty switch and nothing and the connection to the tranny is good so im at a dead end again . i bet wen i find the problem it will be so simple that it will make me sick but that would be wish full thinking where else is there sensorrs / relays located that i should check? thanks everone
Does anyone know if there's a modulator on these trannys or is it all electronically controlled?
You could try what my problem was and change the Throttle Position Sensor, located on the left side of the injection pump. Easy to change, two screws and a wire plug. I don't know if a faulty one would give you the symptoms you're describing, but they're cheap enough, $40 at Ford or $25 at Autozone.<O</O
First thing I'd do though is run a new ground from the frame of your truck to the transmission. Electronic transmissions really rely on a good ground and they often lose it through electrolysis and causes all kinds of problems.

I'm still working on my no 3-4 upshift problem, my TPS sensor is only a few months old, but I checked it anyway. It was slightly off, but not enough to make a difference. I adjusted it to specs anyway, but it didnt' help. I just tried to test my RPM sensor, I'm not getting any resistance at all from it, but the tach is working fine!?
