they should just slide off. have you tried tapping the drum with a rubber hammer? penetrating oil? I recently had a stuck drum on my truck and could not get the darn thing off for the life of me so I heated it up and she popped right off. I do recall seeing a puller for stuck drums but cant remember where.
You didn't mention how it's stuck. If it's not stuck due to rust between the axle/drum, you can probably remove it by first backing off the self adjusters then simply pulling.
I have completely backed off the adjuster, soaked it in penetrating oil, heated it up with a torch and beat the crap out of it with a hammer and aluminum rod, after all, I didn't want to ding it up.
Its kinda hard to ding up a brake drum. I've taken a 4 lb sledge to brake drums to loosen them up before without doing any damage. If I get one that is particularly stubborn, I'll get a regular claw hammer and tap outwards (the direction the drum comes off) along the edge of the drum. I've only had to take a puller to a drum once, but that drum was one that had a few tapped holes in it that allowed you to use a steering wheel puller to remove it. There are large 2 jaw pullers available for pulling drums off, but I've never had to go that extreme.
Don't be afraid to hit it though. Worst case is that you'll have to buy a new drum, but they aren't that expensive.
swing straight in at the face towards the outside of the drum(you dont want to hit the studs). Alternate side to side they will pop right off. Penetrating oil and heat don't work in this situation. I've swung with all my might on an F-250 before and never broke anything.
guessrow guessed right......whack it between the studs....put the nuts on ( just in case ya get upset).......there shouls be room to slide in a screwdriver or pry bar if you have snap-on betwwen the drum and brake plate.....by prying on one side and whacking the other side it should come off......................
worse comes to worse.....a Mr.monday sledge. thats a 52 lber to all........
good luck
Ok, I used the Mr. Monday sledge and was able to get one off. Haven't been able to get the other off yet, but heck, it's only been 1 day of beating on it.
I am a little worried about breaking something on the axle or differential by pounding so hard. Anybody have experience with that?
I had the same problem on a 98 Ranger. I tapped it with a hammer, no luck. I took a propane torch and heated the drum by the axle. Keep it moving so you don't heat the axle, just the drum, it came off. I have done this to other vehicles and have had good luck. I hope it works for you
I had this happen last year trying to change the pads. Not a pleasent experience to say the least. I ended up cutting it off " very carefully" with a small hacksaw and 4" angle grinder w\ cutting wheel. New drum was only 28 dollars and some change.
If its hard grind it
