Question Engine Whine

Hey guys, ya'll have always been good at giving me suggestions, so I figure I'll ask even though this one might be hard to diagnose if you can't see the truck. Recently I've been getting a whining sound coming from the engine at idle. I first noticed it yesterday when I was about to leave the house. The sound appears to be coming from the front of the engine although I have not been able to take a stethascope to it to be sure. My dad suggested alternator...anything other suggestions that I should look into? I plan on going to autozone or somewhere to ask one of them tomorrow after school. Thanks for any suggestions.

Does it change with rpm? Have you tried to remove the belt and run it for a minute to see if it goes away?

It was more just when the engine was idleing. Like I said though, it was kinda strange. I took it to autozone to see if they could help me diagnose the problem but the minute I got the guy out to listen to it, it stopped, so I can't really do anything unless it returns. He suggested however that the belt might be slipping or something like that. I'll post up if it returns and tell you what I find out.

How many miles?

Could be alternator, power steering, water pump, etc.

It could also be timing chains, or guides, but we have to know the above answers...

Sounds like serpentine belt idler pulleys...

Or not - answer back if it changes pitch with RPM ...

Hard to diagnose over the 'net, but do the stethoscope thing... post back, and we'll work on it.

sorry for it being a while...here's an update

it does not appear to change pitch with the change in RPM. Also, I noticed that if the truck it started cold this does not happen but if I start the truck about 5 minutes after I shut it off then the whine will start for a bit.
