I thought relocating it would make it even easier. Had the pleasure of changing my XP-oil and I got to say its not as easy as my wife's V70 - one cannot avoid to get 'oiled'.
I'm up for another oil change and I thought the time to do it is now.
I found http://store.summitracing.com part no. TRD-1227 which got double filter (TRD-1127 is single filter).
Any thoughts, comments, bad experience on trying remote oil filter?
well the bad side is you can cause extreme startup wear because it take longer to get oil up to the valve train and whats the big deal with where the filter is now seems pretty easy to me i have never had a problem with it. sure you may spill some oil but oh well.its a oil change.
Do you have small hands? Because I have big hands and I have a hard time getting the oil filter wrench up to the filter to get it off. Relocation is GOING to happen on my truck... Now all I have to do is save up my pennies
small hands , nope about 6 inches wide 8 inches long i have the biggest hands i have ever seen but i never use a filter wrench to remove it i use my hand if you put it on right it won't be to tough to get it off you just allow the gasket to contact the mounting surface then turn 3/4 turn then you're done.
I was just looking into one for myself. My '99 4x4 makes a mess when the filter is changed due to the location. I found a kit at performancecenter.com for about $60.
I'm hoping to find one that is not universal and will use the oil filter that first generation expediton uses.
Haven't heard from anybody who had tried one on their expedition and should be interesting to hear form them first hand if it its worth it and if it in fact cause their motor to go bad pre-maturely.
I bought the Perma Cool filter relocation kit from Summit for my '00. I have not installed it yet. I assembled it and have it ready to go in. It seems like a high quality kit. Just waiting for the next oil change to come due. The kit p/n I have is PRM-10695. I will post an update once its installed in the next couple of weeks.

Do you have the 4x4? On the 4x4 the transfer case is ALL in the way. In order to get the filter out you have to reach between a crossmember and the transfer case to get it out BLINDLY. All those with 4x4 will agree that the filter removal is a BEAR!
Are we all talking apples to apples here? I have a 4.6L 4X4 - The oil filter is located right behind the drivers side headlamp in front of the wheel. Real easy to change. Yeh it takes one hand to unscrew the filter once it's loose and the other hand holds a small drip tray to catch the mess from the filter. It's a juggling act to minimize the mess but access is cake. I see most of the complaints from from 5.4L owners. I new there was another reason for buying the 4.6L besides the dream of good gas mileage with sufficient power. Haven't realized either of those, but oil changes are easy.
