The A/C in my 85 F150 has never worked, I've owned it for over a year and a half, and it never worked for the previous owner, who also bought it used. I would like to remove the A/C equipment to clean up the engine compartment. Would I be safe to assume that the system is not pressurized anymore? Their hasn't been a belt attached to the A/C compressor since the previous owner bought it, about five years ago. I just don't want any hoses blowing up in my face when I go to unclamp them. Also, would removing this affect anything else? Like heat, etc? Any info would be great. Thanks.
First, unless there is a leak in the system; they stay pressurized for a long time. You may want a mechanic to just drain any freon out of your system before you start. If not, you can work slow and loosen bolts slowly to remove your system. If it starts hissing, then you still got pressure. Tighten up the nut and get it to the mechanic to remove the freon. Make sure you remove the condensor in front of your radiator. That will help everything run a little cooler.
However, if you want to get your system working; I have a compressor and drier that I will send you for the cost of shipping. It should be a direct replacement for your vehicle and it worked fine when I pulled it off. I replaced mine with a Sanden compressor for looks, efficiency, and they type of brackets I used. There are really not a lot of components to an A/C system to replace to get it working.
Thanks for the info. I really plan on just getting rid of the A/C, not replacing it, but thanks for the offer. With the sliding rear window in a regular cab truck, the air just flows right through with the windows open, so I really don't need A/C. I also hate maneuvering around the A/C equipment in the engine compartment, so getting rid of it will make things a lot easier. Thanks again.
Nah, I'm from Taxachussetts. I wish I came from a state where the roads weren't salted for a third of the year, maybe my poor truck bed wouldn't be as cancerous as it is! But yeah, heat isn't a huge problem here, so A/C is more like a luxury than a necessity. My Ford van didn't have it, and I don't really need it based on how well air flows through the little cab. Thanks again!
Follow the air lines and you should find a vlalve stem used for filling and draining the system take a small scredriver and depress the stem you'll know if it has freeon or not.It doesnt matter if its the high or low side the pressure is equalized when the system is not cycling. You can also drain it this way but dont get caught.
good luck.
Thanks for all the help guys, I really can't afford to bother bringing it to a shop just to have them remove the equipment, the truck has enough "real" problems for me to worry about. Hopefully no freon police will be in my yard when I decide to do this!
