i have a 1980 F350 with a performance 460 and a C6 tranny. this whole truck is custom, and has a lot of added weight, such as a whole 2nd frame, and a 500lb. rear bumper. every time i try to go up a steep hill, i cant help but think that the poor C6 3-speed tranny is going to blow. i would like to put the late 80's 4-speed AOD tranny, or a 4 or 5 speed manual transmission in it. this transmission is havng a problem holding it's own, and i dont want to blow it. does anybody have any ideas? has anyone experienced this, or done this swap before? what modifications would i need to do. this truck is a 4X4, so i would need to make sure the transfer case would bolt up to it. thanks in advance.

That "poor C-6" is a bullet proof transmission - well, as bullet proof as one can be. It will outlive an AOD. The only tougher ones I know are the T-18 an the NP 435.
Keep the fluid changed and a good cooler on it and you will make it last for a very long time.
What do you mean by not holding its own?
The C6 does rob power compared to a C4 or a stick, but you get the tradeoff of reliability and durability.
If it is having a problem "holding its own" it may need work. Keep in mind that the primary internal difference between the car, light truck and heavy truck C6s is the number of clutches. Light duty transmissions have a spacer in the back, whereas the heavier ones like found on most 250s and higher have the full clutch packs. (External differences are minor, and include linkage design, bellhousing shape, and shift touch.)
well, you don't want an AOD. What you might try is an E4OD or a ZF 5-speed manual. like banjopicker said, the C6 is pretty bulletproof. it probably won't break as long as it's in decent shape.
it is very strong, but when i was going up a steep hill, i was in drive, then started loosing speed, so i downshifted into 2nd, and the RPM's went up, but i was still loosing speed. thats what scares me. it wouldn't even maintain it's own speed. should i have the clutches looked at or something?
is nthe tranny slipping? a C6 is a tuff tranny tuffer than any aod wich will only give you a taller final gear and won't pull any better rebuild the C6 or have a GOOD tranny man doit and put in a shift kit how much des this monster weigh and why you must have some really big tires to need to stack frames whats your final ratio maybe 3.0 to 1 remember wheight tire size and gearing are all factors in performance
i have a 2.5'' lift with 32's right now, but its going to have a 10'' with 38's. i blew out the old rear end, which im going to put back in if i can fix it. it was a Dana 70 with 4.10 gears, and right now i have a Dana 60 with 3.54 gears. does that make a big difference? is that my problem? it weights a little over 1,000lbs. above a stock F350 dually 4X4.
