Im considering a set of heads for my stock 78 460 2wd truck.
A simple question.....I would like to get as much HP and TQ as possible with-out getting below the cam. I also drive this truck every day and need to keep it on pump gas.
So....are Edelbrock Performer RPM heads a bolt on affair? 94cc.
What cam to use?
Weiand Stealth?
Holley Truck Avenger in 770cfm?
A nice set of headers.
What do you think I could make HP wise with this combo?
The problem you'll run into is that your compression with those heads will be way too low to make decent power. That engine should have the dished pistons unless they've been swapped for something different and your current heads should be close to the 94cc mark already. So if you replace the heads with the same basic head, only aluminum you're not going to see a lot of change. I'd suggest using the TFS heads which use a 74cc chamber and will really out flow those Performers. If you really want to use a Performer head they are available with the smaller chamber also.
Monsterbaby just recently helped me put together a combo with TFS heads, a 234/244 cam @ .050, I'm using a Performer RPM intake (very close to that Stealth which would be my first choice but I already had this) and have L&L headers. DD2K shows it at about 550 horse with a proper carb. I have a Street Avenger 770 on there now and it's too small. I'll be going to an 825 or 850 Demon. Anyhow my combo is not the best option for gas mileage and the cam is probably a bit more than most people want on the street but that should give you an idea of what you can do and what to expect. I'm sure someone who knows cams better than me will have some suggestions for you.
Yes, dished pistons, .040 over. I'm only at about 9:1 compression but it beats the 7:1 stock compression and I don't have to use high octane fuel. If I blow up my bottom end I'll go for 10 or 10.5 compression . . . unless I find a screaming deal on a blower.
The cam I have is a Clevitte (sp?). Got the cam and lifters for $100. They're available on ebay all the time.
Btw, I'll be at about 4-5MPG. Don't know what gas prices are like in your area but at $2.30 a gallon you'd spend $5-$6 a day for going to work.
