Yesterday I noticed a low hum/vibration in third and when in forth it gets louder
but I dont have a problem shifting, no grinding when going into gear ,she down shifts fine so I looked at the transfer case and saw a bolt that looks like a drain plug ,I say that because it is on the lower bottom left,it has a little fluid around it and it looks like the rear seal has been leaking. Now my question is, there are two bolt /plugs one at the bottom and one at the top but am I right are they plugs? On my trans there are bolts that look like plugs but hold gears in place I've been told and told not to loosen them, does the t-case have the same thing ?Can anyone tell me which is the drain and which is the filler plug?
Like 94XLT says one should be a drain plug and one a fill plug. You don't loosen them, you take one out to drain, replace it and use the other one to fill it. Don't know what vintage/type Bronco you have so cannot suggest fluid. Is it a manual transmission or an automatic/OD?
My 88 has the mazda 5 speed and uses mercon fluid which I was surprised to find out about, the guy I bought it from had used gear oil. My rear seal is leaking also when replacing do I need to pull the trans or can I drive it in from underneth?
I haven't a clue about Mazda 5 speeds, I did know from posts that they should use Mercon Fluid. PM Fredrick or Fefarms for that or someone will be on that will see and help. My experience with manual transmissions goes back to the 4 spd w/a granny low and 10 or 15 spd rangers in L-9000 or Sterlings, and that's driving them, not working on them.
Its a 1982 standard trans c-6 three speed with overdrive. If the trans goes I can get a remanufactured for $500.00 but the t-case is about 1800.00 does anyone know where to buy a rebuild kit for it?
This place has everything you need for the rebuild. http://drivetrain.com/ I am not sure what T-case you would have but they should have a rebuild kit for it.

Did the gear oil mess the tranny up? I have no idea about the Mazda 5-speeds and what can be put in them. I know many guys out here that own newer super dutys that use gear oil in them. They do it because under the extreme heat and towing it holds up better. One friend has almost 250,000 on his 99 7.3 and has used gear oil since he bought it with no problems. Like I said, I have no idea if this can be done with the Mazda.
I don't think it did any damage. It shifts fine with the exception of maybe needing a new clutch. The guy I bought this from was not too concerned with upkeep so I am finding all kinds of surprises. I'm in LV too so I may put the question out there for any more input, I have gotten alot of good info from this site already in a short period of time. I wish I had found this when I had my F250.
