I'm an owner of a '87 Ranger and the motor is about to go on it, i was just wondering what v8 i can drop in there without braking the bank, i heard that a 5.0 from a stang can fit in there very nicely as long its the same year. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
well how much do you want to spend getting the engine in is one thing but then you need everything else. new wiring, mounts ,trans, driveshaft, new cooling system, shifter, all new front accesories and maybe new front springs just keep it simple and put in a rebuilt engine.
Swapping engines requires a lot of skill and can be very expensive. You could do this for under $1500, if you find a good motor. I think the best thing you can do is run a carb'd 302 with a points type distributor, and an electronic conversion kit such as a Pertronix Ignitor.
A 302 in a ranger can be done but you also need to swap the transmission, change the radiator, fabricate or buy conversion motor mounts, and do some modification to the heater/ac case and bottom of the firewall. Do a google search for 302 ranger swap and you will find lots or information and parts sourses.
You can do it without the body lift but you need to remove the heater/AC box and modify to clear the valve covers and you may need to take a sledge hammer to the lower firewall/trans tunnel to get clearance to the bell housing bolts. You will also need a remote oil filter to clear the steering sector. As Kemicalburns says a 2" body makes things much easier.
