Okay, so I was at the local junkyard, and I geuss they changed their rules, but the office guy would not let me go wondering around to see what I could find yesterday. I didn't have any thing specific in mind, just a college kid with a afternoon to spend. So, the office guy asks me to name what I am looking for, so I name something random, Ford 460,lol. Long story short, I left there with a business card and a motor swap project dancing around in my head.
They have a complete and running (so they say) 460 with C6 from a '77 Lincoln for $450. It's covered with the the usual used motor old oil sludge coat on the outside, but no rust. He said it has over 100,000 miles and doesn't know the compression. The possible plan is to swap out my 351W (120 psi lowest cyclinder, 140 highest, no smoke) for the 460. I dont have any experience with boneyard motors, is this a good deal? Is it worth swaping the 351w out of my '81 F150 SWB 2wd for this 460? According to some random webpage, that 460 only has 208hp vs the 150? of my transplanted 1985 351w. Will I even be able to tell the difference in power?
Oh, is it even smart to trust the junyard guy, and put a unknown condition motor in my truck?
dude dont trust any guys at a junk yards i been dealing with these guys for 25 years.fIRST OFF ALL they want is your money.take your time and look around im sure these motors are at other junk yards near you also.even though thats a cheap price who knows whats wrong with that old 460 you want.then you will need to spend another grand to get that thing running.I wanna do the same swap you do but i aint buying anything if i can't hear it run first thats for sure.anyway man good luck.
Thanks for the good advice, but Iwas stupid and bought a 460 and C6 combo for $900 from another junkyard. I paid $400 extra for one that had 170 psi compression in all cylinders. They promised it did. Well, took it home, tested it, and none were above 120 and one was at 90! Took it back this morning and they were even kind enough to charge me a $400 restocking fee, how kind of them.
Oh well, you live and you learn. Never trust anyone at a junkyard!
Lol,heck yes. Now they are giving me junk about the refund I was suppose to get. Credit card co. said there aren't any refunds pending, so I went ahead and disputed the charge. Stay tuned, as 30 days from now the credit investigation will be done and the results will be in. I have three ASE certified mechanics on my side.
VISA said that 90% of the time, people get their refunds. So I have my little hopes up.
