if the inline six is picky about what plugs/wires/cap/muffler/02 sensor/air filter/ it uses. can you guys tell me exactly what is best for a 1995 f-150 xlt, 5 speed,
in my opinion Accell wires, accell plugs, wells cap @ rotor, Flowmaster muffler, Bosch 02 sensor and a K2N air filter. But a 300 is not really a pickey engine, actually it is a great engine. Nobody likes it becuase it doesn't have 8 cylinders.
The 300 inch six is a great engine. Enjoy it, love it, and keep it--you can't get them anymore. Ford went with the new "bubble truck" (my 3-year-old-son's term) design and it won't fit. The 300-inch I-six was built for trucks and is truck tough! I was thinking of getting a v-8 but when I found a '95 F-150 with a 300 six, set up just as I like it, I couldn't resist (this is the only engine I have ever had in all my Ford trucks since '77). It has nearly as much torque as the 302 v-8, and I think is a stronger built engine with it's 7 main bearings (bet the v-8 has only 5) and its direct gear driven cam (the v-8 has a chain). The only other Ford engine that has the maximum amount of main bearings, I think, is the 450 diesel (correct me if I am wrong), which appears to also be a truck-only engine. Some claim the 300-inch six can pull like a 350 v-8 with a few easy mods to the intake and exhaust.
i agree the 300 6 is a good motor but the 302 has more power for pulling the big loads.my 82 van had no power so i figured the motor was getting worn out so i replaced it.it wasn't much better so i tried changing the gearing which did help some but still not enough.
i swapped in a 302 and now i can pull whatever i need to without a problem and can kick it in and pass without worrying if i'd make it.the old 300 six is a great motor for just tooling around, the old one had 230,000 miles on it and was put in another van and is still running good.
The 302 V-8 has the advantage of a lot more horsepower, which means it can do its work (torque) faster; hence quicker passing. It also is a great engine, but I think it also got dropped by Ford for their new modular engines.
The 302 or 5.0L lives on in V8 Explorers/Mercury Mountaineers the Triton V8 with its OHC heads don't fit in the Explorer/Mountaineer. I was stuck at a closed mountain pass last year and had a rental Mountaineer parked next to me. I asked about this and the owners manual came out. 5.0L V8.
