The overhead console is famous for having problems with the surface-mount resistors on the PC board. A solder touch-up usually fixes it completely. If you aren't handy with a VERY low wattage soldering iron, I suggest you take the PC board to a local TV repair shop or the like. It should be cheap enough to try it and see.
Many of these Fords have problems with the OD switch wires rubbing and wearing on the top of the steering column where they pass over before entering the dash. They can short out or break in two. I had the same problem with an old 92 F250 gasser and repaired the wires by removing the top and bottom shroud covers from the column so I could get to them. A little solder and shrink wrap fixed her right up.
Thanks for your input everyone ! After further investigation the overdrive switch is working in Park and Nuetral, i am going to try what guzzle92 suggested. Thanks SpringerPop for the idea on the overhead console i will give it a try. Thanks for the welcome RedStroker6, being a new Ford owner (ex Chevy ) its nice to know that there is a good support network.
I know the VVS sensor on the rear end can cause problems with the od..... does the od light flash on and off? (this sensor will also cause shifting anomolies, because the tranny will go into safe mode and it'll shift really hard)

I agree....it sounds like a broken wire on the OD switch. If it's making contact intermitently, it could cause eratic behavior in the transmission.
