Trailer towing

Hi i have 1973 f 250 C/S long bed single cab with new 390 motor. I would like to buy a fifth Wheel trailer 29ft, trailer + load = 10,000 lb will this set up work for me or ? will i need a larger motor 460, towing a 10,000 lb trailer is that to large for the truck and what would the mpg be like on a trip 55 mph avg. I love this truck and i have the bucks to fix the truck to do the job right. i also looked at a pull trailer 21 ft 8,000 lb but i like the fifth wheel a lot better.
I love my truck
No smog. and i can work on it my self....no computers on this truck and it has never let me down....I need your help the guys at the rv stores no nothing about the older pickup trucks.. I would like to know what i can tow and be on the safe side. Thanks first time poster

the 390 will be fine but how new is the engine you need to wait a few thousand miles on any new engine to break it in before towing the 390 will pull fine with lots of torque to spare.and you need good trailer brakes i have pulled 12,000 with my 390 no problems i will pull a steady 70 on the highway expect about 7 highway with that load maybe less like 5

Bert, Welcome to FTE The best truck show on the net.

Sounds like you have a perfect candidate for the job. The 390 as long as it isn't over cammed and carbed, should pull the trailer like a train.

I say Go for it.

The 390 was a great motor with a lot of power, if its a auto I would consider a transmission cooler, I have also used a add on oil cooler with a lot of success. The one big problem that the older carburetor trucks had was with vapor lock and that can be solved with a electric fuel pump right after the last fuel tank (if it has two tanks) to push fuel to the mechanical fuel pump, that keeps pressure in the line so no vapor lock. In my 81 460 I just eliminated the mechanical pump all to together.

Happy RVing Denny
