I just bought a '92 Ranger xlt 4x2,5 speed with 76,000 miles on it. Two mechanics looked at it before I bought it. Now I get a check engine indicator light that comes on periodically. Does anyone know what this might mean or should I just ignore it? Would it do that if it were overheating? My thermostat doesn't seem to be working either.

Most likely your check engine light is on becouse of an emissions control item, 02sensor etc.
Unfortunatly you will have to take it to the shop and have it hooked up to scanner to retrieve the codes.
As far as your thermostat not working is it running to hot or not hot enough? If its running to cold maybe its causing you to run to rich most of the time and setting off the engine light.
Good luck.
You can get a code scanner from JC Witney for $35 and read the engine code as often as you want. A mechanic will cahrge you $50 just to check. Most likely it is the O2 sensor or the TPS. Personnally, I would replace the O2 sensor and the TPS.
BTW: If the O2 is going bad your gas mileage should drop, but if the tps is going bad you won't even notice it because the engine can run fine without it. (It just speeds engine response time at WOT)
Memory ,
You can retrieve codes from the computer with a simple jumper wire plugged correctly into the EEC IV connector . You have two diagnostic modes , engine off and running . All you have to do is connect the jumper wire , turn the key on , watch and count the number of blinks . Get and read a good diagnostic manual for your vehicle . Dont just change parts unless you know what is actually wrong ....they cost too much just to switch them based on a theory .
