For you folks that have sold stuff on E-bay, when do you provide feedback to the buyer? Do you wait to see if he is giving you positive feeback or do you post feedback based on the buyer's part of the transaction?
The reason I'm asking is that I recently made a purchase on E-bay. I used the "Buy now" feature and paid immediately using PayPal and the seller refuses to provide me any feedback until I post feedback on him. He says his policy is to wait to see how I feel the entire transaction went before he posts his feedback.
I told him that if everyone adopted that policy then nobody would get any feedback as we would all be waiting on each other.
give him his feedback after you recieve the item. you should be able to go into your recent transactions, select his, and leave feedback accordingly... It's always irritating when the high-flutin sellers with 4 bijillion sales don't leave feedback for you, so it looks like you don't do any business, but it happens. Anyway, good luck on the world-wide marketplace!
As a seller, I usually leave feedback after the buyer leaves feedback. I've seen buyers leave negative feedback because the properly advertised size 9 shoes didn't fit their feet. Well, to me, that is a risk of buying something over the internet. If the seller had already left positive feedback, then he has no recourse. I really don't like the feedback system, but I work it to my advantage to keep my 100% score.
I have left feedback as soon as payment is received and have received positive feedback with no problems. I beleive their feedback is a good track record and if you are suspicious of what type of feedback they leave then just play the waiting game. Eventually they will leave feedback for you first. Then you may leave the feedback you deem necessary. I once waited a user out for a few months before they would leave feedback for me. Then I left my positive feedback for them. Better safe, than sorry.
as a buyer, i leave feedback after item has arrived and has been inspected to verify condition. as a seller, i leave feedback after item has been paid for and shipped.
Kind of like tjc--if I'm buying, once it arrives and I've checked it. If I'm selling it, not until the buyer has inspected it and at least let me know that it's satisfactory, whether through feedback or e-mail. Being a good buyer isn't just paying for it--it's also knowing what to do with the item once it's arrived. I buy and sell computer parts quite a bit, and while I haven't had the problem much myself, I know some buyers who have screwed stuff up and then blamed the seller. So, I wait until I hear from them. I also check the other guy's history--you can see what feedback he's left for others, and if he has a history of not leaving feedback, I don't leave him feedback either until he's left it for me.
i should have added that i have only sold 6 items on ebay, 2 stereos, and 4 cars. only shipped 1 stereo, the other one and the cars were picked up, so it kinda was a nobrainer that good feedback was in order rite away.
I don't like the feedback system. Most sellers wait until you feedback favorable before they respond in kind. A negative feedback, however justified, will receive a negative usually.

Tom.
Well, I went to Ebay university when it came to town last February and this exact question came up. They indicated that it's customary for the seller to initiate the feedback. I've never given or received negative feedback on ebay. It's best to try to resolve any disputes/problems before taking such action.

I completely agree. To me, a good buyer has to also show some fairness and understanding. For example, a seller promptly sends an item out upon receipt of payment from the buyer but for some reason the package gets lost or delayed. These are factors beyond the seller's control. It would be completely unfair for the buyer to leave the seller negative feedback saying that he/she is a fraud, especially without even taking the time to contact them first with the problem. For this reason, as an eBay seller, I always wait for the buyer to leave me feedback before reciprocating. If they unfairly leave me negative feedback, especially without contacting me first with any problems, I sure as heck will retaliate.
Also, as mikebon08 said, I look at an eBay'er "feedback left for others" to see if they show a pattern of not leaving positive feedback for those who left them positive feedback. Out of personal principle, I won't scratch someone's back if I know they are not going to scratch mine in return.

Same here.
My feedback is 277 (100%), but I've had a lot of people not leave feedback on me. I think out of about 400 transactions, I've left about 395 feedbacks. The other people were difficult to deal with, but I didn't feel like leaving a negative, so I left nothing at all.
I wish they had a 5 point scale feedback system. Too many leave A++!! feedbacks for people that are B- at best. It hurts the people that are really good, (sellers that ship the next day with communication and buyers that pay as soon as the auction is over.)
I leave my feedback as soon as I inspect the product. If there's a problem I'll email the seller to see if they want to fix the problem before I leave feedback. I've been shortchanged a few times, but it was from sellers that had too many items going at once and was basically an oversight issue. They fixed it and I left Good feedback like, "Item had issues unknown to seller, seller made right!" Rather than, "Awsome Ebayer!!! AAA+++"
I leave feed back after I receive the item and it is what I expect. If I have an issue, I get ahold of the seller to work something out, if they don't want to work something out, then I might exercise the negative option if they are really bad. As a seller, I do wait until they post to see how they will respond. I have been hit with neutrals and once or twice negatives when they could have worked something out but chose not to.
Even if the seller has not left feedback for me I leave it when I am satisfied with the transaction. I have had a number of times that the seller never left any for me though. I have no issue with their waiting, I understand why and leave it for them when I am satisfied, and hope they follow suit.
The feedback system does not work well, because of fear of retaliation. If everyone did not give feedback until the other party did, there would be no feedback. It would be gridlock.
Feedback should be given at the point it is earned. The seller should give feedback when payment is received. They buyer should give feedback when item is received and it is what was represented.
I propose (and I have suggested this to ebay) that a feedback ratio should be part of an ebayer's rating. For every feedback you give you get a point (numerator) and for every one you receive you get a point (denominator). My ratio would be 593 (feedback left)/523 (feedback received)=1.13. A good citizen of the ebay community would strive to have a ratio greater than 1.
