Ive a 90 300 , I find cleaning the throttle body and bypass valve about once a yr does the trick . I bought a bottle brush that fits great in and around the throttle body . Ford makes some great stuff for cleaning those areas ...its like foaming bubbles shower cleaner only for carbon . Its called Spray Carberator Tune Up Cleaner , an 18 oz can goes a long way . What I do with the bypass valve is remove the two 8mm bolts holding it on , disconnect it from the solenoid and spray the valve w the cleaner , let it set for awhile , use a pipe cleaner or a Q tip to clean it up , wipe off the excess cleaner and reinstall . Make sure the gasket is still in good shape . Cold weather always makes excess carbon deposits more noticeable , So its a good idea to clean all that stuff in the fall so you dont have to work out in the cold if you dont have a garage to work in . If you havent noticed any idling or driveability problems , Im sure its Ok .

Got a few questions for you Paul or whomever responds. How far back into the trottle do you go? What kind of injector cleaner should I go with? Should I use 2 bottles at the same time for more power?
Actually, it idles, and is starting to hesitate like it did before the first cleaning. I am thinking that it may just do this becuase of the cold weather, but I would like to keep the mpgs and performance up! Thanks again

The cleaner I like to actual clean the throttle plates / body is Fords Spray Carb Tune Up Cleaner . Just scrub all the carbon off the bore and plates . Just go in as far as the brush allows , thats about all you can do short of removing the upper intake to clean it . Be careful with using a lot of fuel injector cleaners that you pour in the tank ..I dump some in about once a yr .. Techron , Castrol and Marvel Mystery oil all make good in the tank cleaners . My 300 6 had a rough idle from day one ... about 6 yrs ago I discovered they had revised the fuel injectors for that engine ...Better spray pattern along with being Deposit Resistant Injectors . I got them for about $70 a piece . I would buy 2 ,every 2 weeks on payday until I had all 6 . They really improved the idle tremendously as well as mileage and overall smoothness of the engine . Unless you do a lot of short haul trips with your truck , cleaning more than once or twice a yr is a waste of time ...Tell your wife the same about cleaning the house too .. Hope this helps .

What is a "Throttle Bypass Valve"? I have cleaned my throttle body along with the upper part of the intake manifold (at least as far as I could safely reach). I have a 92 302 with speed density.
I cleaned the TB today, no problem with that. I can see the Letter "A" on the butterfly. Its really clean now. No black soot. I guess its called Carbon.
I also took the bypass off. I didn't even break the gasket. Thats a first. I cleaned it as best I could, and noticed that the first hole is very clean, but I tried and tried to clean the second hole out, but couldn't get all of the carbon off. When I first cranked it over, it kinda acted as if it didn't have gas, but I got it started finally, and it idles very smooth.
I also decided to replace the 2 year old fuel filter. That was fun!!!! I finally got fustrated and took it to a mechanic, and had him do it. After a lot of cussing. Its fixed. It runs alot better. Same as it was when I had the throttle cleaned about 2 years ago. And it cost me a total of 30 dollars. a lot cheaper! Thanks Guys! I'm glad you guys are here for the questions!
i have an f-150 4x4 5.0l manual xmsion i have one question. why does the throttle body get carbon build up? i would think if you have a good air filter it will never get dirty. is this true? yes thanks alot fellas for all the great info too!
this site is great
I'd like to add to the reason for carbon buildup. Yes the EGR as well as PCV or the main culprits for this action, but the sludge actually forms from the inside of the manifold coming out because of the vacuum pulses present in the intake.Isn't that weird how that happens ? If the filterd air was to blame, the beggining of the throttle body would always be caked just like what you see when open the throttle and look inside! It's the stuff inside that's actually pushing itself outward because of the vacuum pulses in the manifold.
