I have to clean the throttle body on my expy about every 5k miles...the gas pedal really begins to stick (very irritating when maneuvering around a parking lot). For those of you who have to clean the throttle body, how often do you have to do this? Is every 5k miles normal. I bought the truck with 66k and it now has 80k miles on it, and I've cleaned the throttle body three times.
According to the lil sticker on my TB there is a special coating on it and it says "CAUTION: DO NOT CLEAN THROTTLE BODY. IT HAS A SPECIAL COATING THAT WILL BE REMOVED" or something along those lines.
I have 125K miles on my truck. I've had to clean the throttle body due to sticking only once, around 90K. After I over-oiled the K&N. I used a little mineral spirits (paint thinner) on a soft rag and wiped it lightly to remove the black stuff. Did both body and butterfly. Let dry. No problems since.
While you you have the induction tube off, use a little rubbing alcohol on a Cue Tip and gently clean the MAF sensor wires. Let dry. Reassemble. New truck!
99expyTN; Use the throttle plate and intake cleaner made by
3M,It is safe to use on coated throttle bodies and plates, it is a very effective cleaner for this job. Just be sure not to saturate the shaft on the TPS side or this may potentialy contaminate the TPS and render it useless or worse it may cause a sudden accelaration
type effect. Also use this product on the mass air flow sensor, just a word of advice make sure the throttle plate remains open for a little while after you have sprayed the entire bodie or else it could back fire.

Hey Philp, I cleaned mine at 110K miles and I used a rag with some carb/choke cleaned on it. Just wiped around the the edge where the plate touches the body and the outer edge of the plate. No more problems. There was an earlier thread that said that Ford had trouble with holes in the castings of the throttle body and thats why the coating is there. Good Luck!
The first two times I cleaned the TB, I used mineral spirits. This past time I bought a TB cleaner (said it was safe for coated TBs). To clean it, I remove the air intake, hold the butterfly valve open, and spray around where the valve would touch the body. I then take a clean rag and wipe around the body itself and then the edge of the butterfly valve. The rag always comes back coated with black residue.
After each cleaning, the throttle works great......no more sticking. We'll see how long it last this time. Also, I don't do any extreme driving, off-roading, etc.
