Ok, so tomorrow after I get my truck inspected, I'm gonna cut the first cat off my truck. My truck is a 93 5.0L and in these models (87-96) the first cat is dual in. So i am gonna have true dual straight pipes
Now, can this hurt the engine? The length of the pipes go until under the passenger seat(maybe 3-4 ft. from manifolds). I'm gonna run this way for a couple days.(till i get Y-pipe). I've heard this may cause valve warp...how??
I have worked on motorcycles for sometime and this is my first foray into trucks. So, I would appreciate if someone will correct me if I am wrong. From my knowledge on motorcycle exhaust, this is my understanding. Too short a pipes can affect in two ways - first, when riding on low rpm (or normal riding rpm), the exhaust pulses will not exit the pipes as they come. They travel back and forth before the leave. If one of the pulses hit an open valve, it will contaminate the combustion chamber, thus not giving you good performance. Will someone correct me if I am wrong?
Second, I would think that too short a pipes will not dissipate the heat better. This may burn the valves (or warp them as you would say).
The only thing you will hurt is your ears. As long as there is some pipe there. It is a different story with open headers or open manifolds. Cops won't like you very much..................--Ryan
Your neighbors will not like you very much either.
nsaikia- Sort of what you are describing can be caused by excessive backpressure, or the exhaust pulses having too much resistance through the system. Backpressure will not be a problem with what MemOrex wants to do.
I ran a 350 GMC with nothing but one 3" pipe all the way back and it was a pleasant sound during normal useage and loud only when stomped on. The issue you may face is how the engine runs w/o the oxygen sensor. Is there one plugged in at or near the cat? If so, that could be an issue. Is the muffler already off? Usually no muffler and leaving the cat works pretty well. I had a Dakota 318 done so it had two cats and no mufflers and both pipes coming out the right side. The fuel tanks on the left side make real duals more difficult if you want one on each side. I took the straight route.
O2 sensor is in a crossover pipe right before where I'll cut the pipes, so no problem with that.
The muffler is on. I took one cat off and will take this other one off because they are too restrictive. I am replacing them with a catco hi-flow. I only need to run straight-pipes until i find the right y-pipe to replace the cat. (Dual 2.25" Single 3").
Do the duals run all the way back to the rear bumper? My experience has been that with a lot of pipe, they are not too bad until stomped on. You love it, don't you? Besides the noise can you notice any other change(s)?
The pipes end under the extended cab....around there. So, I can REALLY hear it. Yes, I love it. I only drove a very short distance, so I can't tell you if there is a difference or not. I'll post tomorrow, when I really take it for a long drive.
I took it for a real drive today....the sound is overwhelming! No 302 should ever be that loud...lol
God, it is very loud! In fact, TOO loud. LOL. I'm putting in the little Y-Pipe in place of the cat tomorrow. Funny thing about the stock Y-pipe: One pipe is 2" and the other is 2.25" where they hook to the D/I cat.....argh, I had to buy a reducer, but no biggie . Check my gallery to see what I mean.
If you want head-turns from everyone, I mean everyone, straight-pipes will get you that! I had this one Cummins really romp one on me...so at the next stop light, I got next to him and I let him have it!
I had to have my radio at 30+ so I could hear it! When passing someone down the HWY, I could just hear the exhaust echoing back at me....
Acceleration did increase pretty good since there is less backpressure.
Ha! Yours is like mine...but I bet mines a bit louder.. true duals!! Hedman Headers, w/stock y-pipe, rammed thru 2.25" pipe, no cats and just simply 2 lovely Flowtech Red Hots...its the goods man. Once those babies warm up they are gold. Enough sound to wake the neighbourhood. Oh ya and it exits the back behind both rear tires on roughly a 45 degree angle. Looks really stout.
I ran straight pipes of the headers there for about 5 minutes...too damn loud. Way to loud. It made a howl noise. It was alright just not the best sound for me. Now tonight I started the truck around a bunch of people and had a few guys take a walk around and tell me it has a nice sound. Headers make a world of difference.
If anyone wants to see my pics of my setup just look in my gallery. I'm going to be adding new pictures of the headers and red hots probably tomorrow.
moose94, do your ears hurt? lol.
GHog, I love that idle sound...very good for that I-6
I don't think I could keep it this way for too long...it is deafening! I really wish I would've had an encounter with a harley or import! I'd show them! I hook the flowmaster back up tomorrow...hopefully it sounds good
