is the H7 code axle a 9.75"?

someone said the 5.4 has a bigger rear axle... i have a 4.6 with the H7 coded axle with limited slip. does anyone know the difference? thanks.

also, how to tell between a 1 and 2 core radiator without taking the whole world apart?

The axle code doesn't indicate the differential size, only the axle ratio and the presence of limited slip.

If you have the 4.6, you should have the 8.8" differential. Take a look at the shape of the differential cover from the rear of the truck. The 8.8 has a symmetrical appearance. If you drew a vertical line down the center, the left side would be a mirror image of the right side. On the 9.75" version, the left side has a rounded appearance, while the right side has a more triangular look to it.

I'm gonna add to this as well, My 97 5.4 4x4 has the H6 code. I am wondering what the designation for this axle is as well. 9.75 or the like? Detroit now claims to offer the true-trac (limited slip performance without the complications of maintenance and wearing clutches!) for almost the entire Ford line as far as I can tell. And with the telltale noise coming from the rear, 150k on this baby, it ain't no spring chicken, I am looking for a way around the $1000.00!! just in labor BEFORE the parts cost of having the Criminals at the dealership rebuild it! Ford wonders why they loose market share? I'll tell you, they ain't the cheapest, and they ain't the easiest to deal with, (see changing the spark plugs on newer trucks), and their quality IS starting to lag.

IMHO!

Still the best truck I ever had, just has issues

great answers, that's what i was lookin for. mine's symmetrical, so i guess it's an 8.8".

i did read somewhere that recently ford used Dana-supplied rear ends. are there any major differences in durability between the Danas or Fords?

What are the front ends in these trucks? I have heard they all use a shortened Dana 44 among the many rumors.
