hey has any one seen or used the new cat back turbos was woundering how good they really are and what the kit contanes i saw one on a 05 hemi truck that came in to my dealership thing went good but any feed back if some one has used it or installed it
All I can think is turbo lag.
Just think how long it takes the exhaust gases to get past the cat, plus thermally it won't be as efficient, as the exhaust gases will be cooler by then.
Not saying it wouldn't work, but if you are going to install a turbo, why not fit it as close to the manifold as possible.
Volvo (on thier T5 S40/V50) actually manufactured the turbo as PART of the manifold to reduce turbolag, and improve thermal efficiency.
I would've thought they'd just lag like crazy, but I know a guy who's running one on his Firebird with a high degree of success. Yes, I know your truck isn't a Firebird, but he said the lag isn't bad at all, definetly not what you'd expect.
I built a setup like this for my 2003 F-150 4X4 supercab, and I can tell you from experience they work and work very well. The success of the system depends a lot on the exhaust housing selection, since it should be different than a turbo used closer to the manifold.
Turbo lag? of course there is, but not much more than a traditional style turbo setup. Above 3k RPM or so, boost was instant. The main problem I had with mine was that I couldn't make much boost if 1st gear, I could get 6 psi but it wasn't until over 4K. But from 2nd and up, I could max out 6 psi at 2K and carry it all the way to 6K.
I could also make around 3 psi in overdrive doing 70 at 1700 RPMs, which makes it really nice going up steep hills with those big heavy 33s. No more downshifting to make it up the hills.
A company that makes a setup like this is Squires Turbo Systems. They specialize in turbo systems that go in place of the muffler. I've seen 2 late-model Camaros with them so far......seem to go ok.
STS is on the web, but I don't know the exact site address.

As for my exhaust note, I had all 4 cats in place at the time, with the turbo after the cats right after the factory Y pipe. And I ran a short little 3 inch down pipe turned down right after the turbo. I loved the exhaust sound. It was nice and deep, but not overly loud. Since the turbo was behind the driver though, you could just barely hear the turbo spool, until you got up to around 4500 RPMs, and then you could hear it pretty well.
But since then I have built my own manifold and put the turbo up under the hood. Removed all 4 cats and run a flowmaster. Now you can hear the turbo spool around 2500 RPMs, and it just gets REALLY loud after that. I am not very happy with the Flowmaster though, and think I might try a straight through muffler design next, like a performance muffler for a PSD and Cummins. I think it will sound better then.
Did you move the STS turbo up under the hood or buy another one? I read their entire website. Seem they know what they are doing and I cant see any real problems with the logic.
I cant understand why they cost so much. Must be the cost of engineering. I would love to have on on my '03 F150 SC 4.6L 4x2 to mostly help with towing my trailer. Just cant justify the cost to HQ, she says:

I never actually bought a turbo system from STS, I just built one very similar. But yes, I used the same exact turbo from my remote system when I moved it under the hood. STS does sell a very good quality kit from what I have read and heard. I don't think you will find any other "turbo kit" for any less money.
They use top quality parts, and have put a lot of engineering into those kits, thats why they cost so much. And of course, people will pay that much, and as long as people will pay that much to buy one, they won't sell them for less, no matter how much it costs them to manufacture.
I read all about them on their website. Sounds good but no kit for Ford yet. I sent them a message saying I was interested and asked when they might have one but have got no reply in 2 weeks???
Ok, here is what you do if you want an STS kit for a Ford. Talk to Crash! at www.trixtersracing.com. From what I understand, they have adapted the STS kit to fit Ford trucks, and they are also intercooled. Crash! can tell you more than I can though, get in touch with him.
