Pittman Arm

Hey Ya'll,
I've got my suspension apart and I'm wondering if a Pittman Arm is supposed to have any movement at all in it. Mine is not "sloppy" just a very, very small amount of play. Should I replace it too? I'm doing this on a 85 F150 2wheel drive. Seems to me even a small amount might seem larger at the steering wheel.
Thanks,
Moe

Moe ,
Id say if you have it all apart , replace the pitman arm ...It doesnt take much slop in the steering dept to make the difference in handling .

Replace it. The slop in the splines will cause wear on the steering box shaft. The arm is cheaper and easier to replace than the steering shaft. The shaft is tapered is you will see when you get it off. The nut on the shaft pulls the arm in and wedges it on, the splines increase the surface area of the joint and keep it from slipping, but it is the tension the nut puts on it that keeps it in place, just like a ball joint. You have lost that tight fit and it is just a matter of time before something happens. Replace it and feel assured that the splines won't strip while your doing 70 down the interstate.
