Dash Lights-Improper Ground?

I'm still trying to get my dash lights to work properly. I've replaced the instrument back panel, the printed circuit board, the bulbs, but the llights still do not work. I do have turn signals and guages, and the "ALT" light comes on at start-up (normal). The fuse is OK.

Somebody suggested that I have a bad ground. How would I go about tracking this down and fixing?

If the turn signal and alt. light work, then the panel has a ground to the printed circuit. Do you have 12V to the fuse when the lights are turned on?

Yes, the lights are on and the level of the dash illumination is at the brightest level. I think I'm going to replace the fuse (even though it appeared to be fine before) to see if that does the trick. Thanks for the input.

There are dash lights for the stock radio, heater controls and headlight/wiper ***** - do these work on your pickup? If not then the problem is the headlight switch or wiring. If they do work, then the problem is with the cluster or cluster connector.

Well, some of those lights were working before I started this little project; not all.

If I remember correctly, the dash light circuit is the blue wire with red stripe. Find this wire in the wiring connector for the guage cluster and test it for power with lights on - use a test light or mulit meter. Tell us what you find.

I don't mean to hi jack a thread, but I have a similar problem. My fuse for the dash panel lights blows everytime I turn on my head lights. I pulled off my guage bezel and went to looking around and noticed my head light switch is getting realy hot. Would this be a bad switch, or wiring problems.
The head lights, tail lights, turn signals, side marker lights, all work. My cigarette lighter, radio, and wind shield wipers work. Everything works except the dash panel lights, and all of them are out.....head light/wind shield wiper light, guage lights, and A/C heater control light.

Does it have an aftermarker radio in it? Sometimes the light wire to the original gets left hanging and grounds out. Yes the instrument lighting wires are light blue with a red stripe.

Mine has an aftermarket radio, but I used the factory wires to wire mine in so there are no loose wires.

Have you tried un-plugging the cluster from the harness & pull the lights on to see if the fuse blows with the cluster dis-connected ?

It usually take about 4 fuses to find out which circuit it is (if you don't have test equipment)

Next, disconnect the power to the radio & ashtray light if it has one.

I assume it blows when the switch goes into the park light position ?
