i know that crane sells a adjustable push rod so that you can get the exact length that you need

what i was referring to in that statement is that i was going to check on the ratio from crane.

I am going to order the pushrods from them.


i am going to order the pushrods, lifters, springs, cam sometime today maybe this afternoon or so i will post and let everyone know what i got and why (or at least what crane told me to get)

 

Hey Russ I guess we agree. They are pretty good rockers that I've used for years. They have been my old stand by.

Xford yep as B mentioned you can purchase an adjustable pushrod or make one out of an old pushrod which I do. They are pretty easy to make if you have a tap and some time. I can explain further if interested.


B the most recent set of HD shafts I bought from Doug at Precision pumps. They are the SAME ones DSC sells only cheaper. Dougs price is now $129.95 vs DSC's at $150 on ebay or $170 on his site. I think DSC lists them cheaper on ebay to compete with the other vendors. Not sure. DSC sells some nice NEW billet steel stands. He sells them for low, medium and highriser heads so pick which you need. As I remember you have the C8 heads which would be the medium riser stands. The stands are different widths except the highriser which are also a little shorter. Just check your application. I'm not sure which Crane springs you need. Best you check the cam specs and ask them. Or DSC sells a nice HD spring kit that should work well. DSC spring kit #2 or #3 would fit the bill depending what springs you need. I think the springs dennis sells are Crane anyway but not positive. Hope you cousin will be ok. Really nice of you to be there for him! G.

I like kurts idea of going to napa and just getting the rockers from them.

 

The stock shafts will be fine with those springs. How much are the rockers at NAPA?

I see they are $11.69 each so $187.04 for the lot plus tax. For the extra $20 I'd get the Cranes but that's me. The thing that sold me was the locking adjuster nut. And they are very heavy duty. If you had one of each in your hand to see it would be very clear the Cranes would be the choice. JMO, G.

 

Honestly guys, I wouldn't touch the Crane rockers with a 10' pole. NO FE EVER had a 1.52:1 rocker ratio, nor do you want one. The rocker shaft will break or the pushrod will bend long before you'll have any problems with the stock type adjustable rockers.

Oh and the price at Napa, if you slip the guy behind the counter $5 and tell him to run you through an account, you can get a real good deal. I can get the adjustable rockers for $8 and some change, per rocker.

 

Hey when I slip the guy at NAPA $5 he gives me a wink and says "thanks"....Thats it! LOL. I didn't find out till much later about the odd ratio on the Cranes. By then that was two engines later but both still running sweet. I'm not sure what I did right or wrong but they worked and ran fine even with the odd ratio. That's why I first brought it up in the beginning of this. I know you lose some lift but what else???

Oh, lets see, flow through the heads, performance...

For instance, instead of the 343941 cam having .533" / .563" lift, it would have .460" / .486" lift with the 1.52 ratio rockers.

 

Yep pretty much what I was expecting. Guess the bigger cams I used gave me some compensation on the loss. Hard to tell for me by the seat of the pants with either rockers. It was not until I was on the net54 FE forum and read through the archives did I come across the difference a few years ago. But everything ran as expected before this came to me. I was a little surprised for sure. Thanks for your insight on this. G.

G where are you getting that info from. (did i miss something) or am i lost or reading backwards????


when you read the Crane website along with jegs and summit. the say the ratio is 1.76

B that info was on the www.fordfe.com forum. Quite a few guys have done the math and found the difference. They are advertised as 1.76 but ring in at 1.52-1.62. Also found the OEM rockers vary from 1.76-1.96. This was a few years ago. When I look at the Crane site www.cranecams.com I find no mention of the 1.76 ratio. I'm going to check the set I have here and see for myself. G.

 

well if that is the case then i can see that i am not going to be using the Crane rockers

Well I talked to my Bud up the road last night..He's a MAJOR ford man...Been building FE's for 30+ years....And he told me and showed me a couple of his engine's Both 427 side Oilers ..one in his boat,another in a 67 GTA..and her swares by Harland Sharps...

He said if anything you get a little more lift out of them..as the add a slight bit more to the ratio than others do to allow for Valve train deflection..for those running Solid roller cams... Makes sense....
