15mpg, is it possible?

I've got an 87 f250, 4x4, 4.10, automatic, is it a dream, or a reality. if it is possible can you tell me the setup to get this mileage?

Give up! It's impossible to get 15mpg out of a 460-powered F250 4x4 without overdrive, and probably even with overdrive.

BTW, if you ever get discouraged, just remember that it's always darkest...

...just before it's completely dark.

Have a nice day!

10 yes, 15 not without spending way more money than the truck is worth or ever will be.

I have the same setup with the e4od overdrive, I am lucky to see 11 on a good day, course, load it with 10,000 lbs. of trailer and I still get 9.

Here is an article done by fourwheeler a few years back looking for the best mileage with the 460: http://performanceunlimited.com/proj...about_mpg.html

Best of luck...

My 1993 F250 gets 9 mpg around town, 11 to 12 mpg on the highway at a steady 70 mph. I keep my trucks maintained and this one has a Flowmaster cat back exhaust system that added no mileage improvement at all. The people that claim 15+ mpg with a 4x4 F250 and a 460 live in a wonder land a long long way from where you live.

Yeah, but your engine is EFI, I beleive an '87 would still be carburated and that's a whole different ball of wax.

With auto and 4.10, I would also say not probable. But I had an '87 4x4 crew with 3.55's and 5 speed that I would occassionally see 15+ and would usually get around 14 'empty' highway.

14.89 MPG on the highway. Thats w/ an '88 F-250 4x4, ext. cab long bed, EFI 460, ZF S5-42 tranny, 3.55 gears, 2.5" lift, 33" tires, at about 65mph. Also have the intake half of the Banks Power pack, and a 3" single exhaust w/ 40-series flowmaster. I still only get about 10mpg around town, and I've dipped as low as 6-7mpg while towing....

The 4:11 gears is the real killer when it comes to gas mileage. You can pull anything with it but you loose all the gas mileage capability.

at one time i got 13-15 mpg out of my 460, but that was when it was still fresh and i added a 780 Holley, the only way to get those numbers was to keep a real light foot over the skinny pedal....but keep in mind, those numbers came from a 2wd with a 3.00 rear...a 4x4 with 4.10's doesnt have much of a chance of 15 mpg without a 5 speed AND a gearvendors overdrive unit, even then the odds are against you.....

I bought my 94 F250 Super cab 4x4 5spd 460 while on vacation in Colorado and drove it back to California. Not sure if I was just so happy about the truck that I didnt notice stopping for gas and foregot to figure those stops into my calculation but I got 14mpg on that trip. NEVER EVER EVER got more than 10mpg after that. Must have foregotten a few stops on that trip.

Gas mileage can also be regional. When I lived in AZ we didn't have the CA smog gas. I consistently get 1-3 mpg better when I run that gas than the CA blend. That was 1998-2000. Now it might all be the same garbage gas.
