A bit off topic here, but reminded me of my first engine build...a 1968 F100 ranger that had a 360....dual holley 4160s, bored out, high performance cam, heads, amd all the goodies...This was my daily driver in high school and I averaged about 2.3 MPG!! That was driving easy!! When opened up, I think the fuel milage was figured in gallons/mile!!!
Sorry, just had to share that one since we are talkin fuel milage....
Ok, I'm back....No Idea what the mileage was because I had to have it towed home!!!!! I DID however take it to the race track, and it turned 14:06 @ 103 mph! Not too shabby IMHO. That almost took away the sting of having to get it towed home today. Someone tried to steel one of my rims, and must have gotten spooked and just left the luggs loose. I didnt notice, and went on my 100 mile drive....Well, I guess you have to have the luggs tight, because the wheel almost fell off on me while driving down the freeway. Well, this ruined the luggs, and the wheel. So I had to have it towed home in shame. But the track results werephenominal in my opinion. I also took it to the scales. The front weighed in at 2260 LBS, and the rear weighed in at just 1460 LBS. The 460 is all stock except for the Holley 750......Maybe when I get a new rim in a cpl weeks, I'll get a chance to get the mileage again. For now, it is crippled, as I'll have to wait about 3 weeks for the rim.
Sorry about your rim . I HATE anuses that take other peoples' stuff.
On the flip side, you have one FAST truck! The key number for me is the 103 mph... Holy cow!! You're talkin' some power there. Adding up your numbers tells me your truck weighs a little over 3,700 lbs. (probably less when your front wheels are off the ground at launch ).
As for me, I just got my best mileage yet... 8.7 mpg! I'm sooo close to nine, it hurts.
Good luck with the wheel studs, wheel and lug nuts! Glad no one was hurt and that the damage wasn't worse.
Wheels up launch lol That's funny! I'll get it fixed and back up and runnin' again soon....It just hurts ya know?I wish I could have caught em doing it.....I would have.....Well, you know....called the cops and stuff.....yeah.....but I would have to make sure they didnt go anywhere first.
I Love it. This discussion for the 460 seems to come up several times a year.
I have gotten 15MPG on my truck many times. (Light on the peddle 50 to 60 MPH) And I am on my second 460 after throwing a rod on my 1st 460.
Let me tell you about my truck. Like the name says it is a 1974 crew cab. I believe the door jam says it weighs in at around 6500#. I believe the tires are cooper 235/70s,(I put different sizes on for winter/summer) It has 4.10 gears in it with Dana 60 differentials, It has power steering, It has the NP435 4 spd(little gear slope) and a np205 transfer, It is carbureted--Motorcraft, It is has some rust rust on the bod.
I normally get around 12 to 13. Strictly in town driven, maybe pushing it I can drop down to 9.5, but if I am easy on the pedal I can get right at 15MPG.
Don't tell me (or many others we are dreaming) If you do a search you can find many others who get close to 15 MPG with their 460s.
but since I decided I’m gonna keep the truck it would cost a lot more to not do it in the long run. I was really surprised that it was 18,
And the above quote tells me there is room to improve. Again if you do a careful search you will find some who give testimony to getting better than 15MPG
I believe the door jam says it weighs in at around 6500#.
I would be interested to see what the scale says about the weight. I know what the door jamb says about my 1990 bronco, but (to quote a famous song) DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!
Weights listed on door jambs are Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings (GVWR), meaning the maximum allowable loaded weight of the vehicle, including the vehicle itself and its maximum cargo load. They are not the curb weights of vehicles.
I know of a couple of 460's that run factory FI that average 14 empty and 10-11 loaded. They run E40D's and 4.11's with 235/85/16 tires and a light foot. For best economy you have to have the tune right on or you are out of luck. RPM's are you enemy for MPG. You need to keep them under 2K and use the torque to move you down the road.
I've seen carbureted ones average 6mpg empty driven very easy and others average 10-11 driven like they were stolen. I think that the most important thing is that the engine is timed perfectly and jetted perfectly.
I still dont believe it until it has been weighed on a scale. I thought my truck was heavy as well.....However, I had a 78 GMC crew cab dually once (never again) It had a 454 in it, and it only weighed 4500 LBS. with both tanks full. That was it's SCALE weight from a licensed scale in Auburn, Wa. The only reason I stuck it on a scale was because it was an out of state truck, and the DOL needed a weigh slip so they could tax me appropriatly. (jerks)
