For a couple days now, when I drive a few blocks the front driver's side tire will start to squeak only when I go 10-20 mph. Plus I think it needs aligned cuz we got the tires rotated and the ones that were on the front were wearing on the inside. I called a shop and they said it'd be 32.99 and if it has something called camatolics (something like that) it'd be 35.00 more each. So what could cause the squeak and does it have those camatolics? I called a few shops and they said wheel bearings would make more of a grinding noise and it is something that couldn't be repacked by a typical person and it'd cost $150-$200. And it could be the front brake pads? I kinda need to know what are some easy tests to diagnose it? Plus Memorial Day we need to haul a trailer full of firewood bundles, is it safe to still do this? It is a 98 Ranger 4x4 3.0 V6
it could be possible that your front wheel bearings need repacking..and YES any normal person CAN do it if you are mechanically inclined. That can be done for the cost of a can of grease..about $2 and your time to do it. as far as the alignment..the CAM is probably out and the parts are $35?..some simple spacer whatchamacallits then an alignment. if the bearings were totally dry and bad then yes it would make a grinding/humming noise..more then likely if it's just a little squeal at low speeds then it's a warning sign to get them packed and check out anything else.
Well my hubby took both tires off and the brakes look the same on both sides so I guess it must be the bearings. Is it going to be safe to drive it and haul that trailer on Memorial Day?
don't know how much grease is on the bearings or how far you are going. Is the squeak consistant at low speeds? loud? how long has it been going on? It might not be a bearing problem. My thinking is that the loaded trailer will take stress off the front end lightening up the front end some. It's one of them situtations where you might be ok this once or this once might be the kicker. See now if you lived in Maryland or Pa i could have looked at it for ya and you'd be on your way.
Here is a post about the camber thing.. If your tires were worn funny you need an alignment. I have head tire chirp at very low speeds when the alignment is off. It could be something else, but I would get the alignment done first.
Well this squeak has only gone on a couple days, and it is consistent at low speeds and is kinda loud, you can faintly hear it when you are sitting in the passenger seat with the windows rolled down. Seems when you go over 25 mph it stops or you just can't hear it anymore. We drove it a few miles last night cuz a guy said to drive it for awhile, then see if it was hot where the hub was (removed it) and it was ice cold. So, not the bearings? We figured we'd try and haul the trailer and then Tuesday get it to a shop and get er checked out.
Was told today that it is the brakes and he said we might as well get the rotors turned while we are down there. Now we don't have the time to do this ourselves, but if we take it to a mechanic how long would it take to put new pads on both fronts and turn both rotors? Also, what kind of brakes would be good to put on it, and price...
if you take it to a shop..plan on them having it all day..it should only take up to 4hrs..but you got to take into account lunch time, break time, smoke breaks(if they are a smoker), b/s time and whatever else they do to waste time..LOL I myself use Bendix breaks...they cost a couplle bucks more..but they are worth it.
Update: Went and bought some nice brakes for almost $50 and took the truck to his buddies place and put her in the shade. Got both sides replaced, had a little trouble knowing how to fit the calipers back on, but his buddies neighbor happened to come over and saw Mike having problems and told him how to get the calipers pushed back in by using the old brakes. Anyways to make a long story short, even after new brakes it still squeaks! So, we went back home and took it all back apart and had to have another mechanic friend come over with a breaker bar to get the nuts off to take the whole bracket off to get the rotors off and they come right off. So in the morning we are going to O'Reilly to get the rotors turned and HOPEFULLY the squeak will be GONE!!! The mechanic friend turned the wheel after the rotor was off and said our bearings were fine and there is quite the gloss on the rotor. Wanted to give an update
Glazed discs can cause a low-speed squeaking noise. One way to diagnose this is while driving slowly and listening to the squeak, gently apply the brake. If the pad(s)or rotor(s) are glazed the noise will go away with light pressure on the brake pedal.
Happens in our fleet occasionally and is usually a driver that "rides" the brakes.
My 2000 4x4 does the EXACT same thing, and has done it for 2 years, and I not the only one. I didnt see the value in having a mechanic guess at it till he is blue in the face, so I didnt bother.
The best I could find out (and there was a TSB on it somewhere) was that the "half-shaft excluder seal (whatever that is) dries out and rubs. It isnt the end of the world, but its an annoying noise. It may also be the hubs if you havent used 4x in a while.
My truck wont squeal as bad on rainy or cold days, and doesnt do it at all in the winter.
For some reason, if you engage the 4x4 it usually goes away for a while which may explain why it doesnt squeal in the winter.
Try it and post back with the results.Im interested to see.

Well, we got the rotors turned and that dreaded squeak was STILL there, so we took it to a different mechanic and he said he didn't know what to think, but as a last effort before he would tear into it said to try and use some lube to put on all the brake parts. WALA!!!! The squeak is no longer there!
If you can find out exactly what and how he did it it would be appreciated. I'd ove to get rid of my squeal but dont want to be spreading lube all over the place.
