I have a 1994 B3000. I installed a new stereo without unhooking the battery, and zapped a few wires. I replaced the blown stereo fuse, and all was fine, but noticed my alternator isn't charging the battery now. I replaced the alt., still doesnt work. I dont see any other blown fuses, no loose grounds, and my tachometer is now dead also. Are there in-line fuses i dont know about? Bad voltage regulator maybe?... Any ideas? Help..
Yes. I checked all the fuses under the hood also, they're good. I heard that some rangers/B-series have an in-line fuse somewhere, but not sure. Also, I'm trying to think what the dead tachometer would have to do with my alternator not charging my battery.
Sounds like a blown fuse link. Yours might be different, but the wiring diagram for my 95 Taurus shows excitor voltage for the alternator is on the yellow wire with white stripe. Look for that wire & if you find a spot where the insulation is blistered, thats the problem.
Have you checked the output voltage from the alternator to verify it's not charging, or are you just relying on the gauge on the dash? Since your tach also died, I would think you might have fried something in the instrument cluster. Just my 2 cents.
If you shorted the system and all fuses are good and your battery is not getting charged, I would suggest getting the battery tested. You may have shorted the battery itself.
