So, when you and your significant ‘other’ head out the door, who drives and why?
With me:
I drive.
Why:
It started 23 years ago when I met my wife. We were young, 19 and 20. During the four years we dated, I always seemed to have the more dependable vehicle. This, combined with my old-fashioned up-bringing, I always drove.
Me and only me. The couple of times that she has been behind the wheel, I can't keep my mouth shut telling her when to go, go faster, go slower, do this and that. Keeps the relationship on an even keel if I drive so that's the way we do it. Plus for some wierd reason, I get a headache sitting anywhere but the driver seat. Too many years in one spot, I guess, and my body rejects sitting anywhere else in the vehicle.
For short trips (less than 100 miles), I usually drive. For longer trips, I start out, but she'll drive 25-30% of the distance. I have no problem with that as she's a good driver - I normally go to sleep once she takes over. That let's us get a lot farther down the road on any given day.
On road trips, Mrs. Bear warms up the pavement 1st thing in the morning while I nurse my latte. how she's avoided a ticket in 18 years is beyond me Otherwise, I usually drive- especially after sundown (her night vision isn't the best).
I usually drive cause she dosent like to and I do. Besides the fact that we always take my truck and she dont want to learn how to drive it (<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008_ZNxdm006BQUS' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/12/12_7_13.gif' alt='Shifter' border=0></a>) and thats fine by me. The way she drives bothers me and I dont like to be the passenger any how.
Well, 99.9% of the time, it's me. Her driving is, uh, not great. If it's in my vehicle, though, it's me all the time. She can't hardly even reach the pedals in my trucks, not to mention steer manual steering, shift a manual transmission, and work a heavy duty clutch all at the same time.
I do have to put a lot of blame for modern driving skills (or lack therof) on the vehicles, though. No real driver input needed, no road feel, and most are so sedate on the road it will put you to sleep. I think everybody should have to drive something with manual everything for a year or so, just to know what it's like to actually drive.
If we are in one of my trucks, I drive. If we are in her SS it's about 70% her and 30% me. I keep threatening that she is going to start driving more often so I don't have to listen to her complain about my driving, but that's not likely to ever happen. She drives the 5 speed funny, and she drives the Lightning like it's a loaded hearse. Put your foot to the floor and let it eat!
Short trips it's me at least 99% of the time. Long trips, we always say we'll split the driving, but I end up driving about 95% of the trip. I can't sleep when she's driving. Not since the incident.
I might let her drive after lunch on a sunny day--that's an almost impossible time for me to drive, though I've learned to get through it a little better by not eating as much. Otherwise, anywhere local, and I'm driving. Long distance trips, she'll drive that 30-60 minutes after lunch. Our longest road trip together was eleven hours one way, and she only drove for an hour on the way back, and not at all on the way there.
