Hi, new here. Just purchased a 2000 V10 Limited with 117000 miles on it. Absolutely love it....just have a noise that is bugging the crap out of me.
My husband doesn't think it is a big deal, but I would love to find out what it is without dropping 60 bucks at the dealer.
Whenever I turn a corner that is a tad bumpy it makes a bump type sound. It usually happens only when one side is going over the bump. It is pretty loud. IT will happen also when I am going down my dirt road without turning but when one tire goes over a bump the truck kind of shifts from side to side and the sound starts.
We have thought it could be the shocks or maybe the springs making that kind of sound. My husband is clueless and he knows alot about vehicles.
If anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated. I just hope my description wasn't too vague.
Thanks,
Emily
Welcome Emily. Your description isn't too vague at all. My Ex was doing the same thing. I was able to figure out that the sound was coming from the passenger side front. I got looking around in there and found that the shock on that side was bent. I replaced my shocks over this last weekend and the sound completely dissappeared.
Keep in mind that there are several things that can cause this, in my case, it was the shock.
Possable causes:
1) Broken body mount bolt
2) Worn Sway-bar end links or broken sway bar bolts.
3) Worn/loose Panhard bar or panhard bar bracket on the crossmember.
4) Shocks....broke, bent, loose, froze up.
5) Ball Joints.....extrememly bad.
Im gonna bet its a body mount or a swaybar issue...but there are a few things that may cause this sound. Good luck!
My vote is for the swaybar endlinks. Emily's description matches the clunking I was getting. My mechanic removed the front swaybar and the noise was gone. New endlinks fixed it.
Get it into the dealer quickly! There is a known issue that my Excursion is suffering from right now: The tie rod ends wear prematurely, and can seperate, resulting in severely affected steering.
That may sound a little extreme, but that's exactly what happened to me Saturday afternoon while with my wife and our six kids! Fortunately, I got it pulled over safely and had it towed.
After some internet research I found that this is a known issue, but Ford will not issue a recall on it. There is a class action lawsuit in the works, and the Canadian government's safety board is deeply involved in that case.
For the safety of your family, PLEASE get the tie rod ends inspected immediately. After learning that this is a common issue, I had my Exc towed to my Ford dealer. They're replacing both tie rod ends (not just the one that seperated) for $325 including alignment... a little steep even for a dealer! If I thought that Ford wouldn't cover this there are several other places I would have taken it, STARTING WITH MY OWN GARAGE! At this point, towing it from the dealer home, then buying the parts, installing them, and getting a front end alignment is going to cost me almost as much as having them do it! AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!
Ford Customer Sevice (including a letter that Ford sent out) says that this is a customer responsibility. Granted, tie rod ends are a wearable part. My 2000 Exc has 42,537 miles on it according to the towing receipt right in front of me. Does anyone else think that this is low mileage?
But even being a wear-and-tear item, when did it become acceptable to have it FALL OUT? When it did come out, the tie rod adjustment sleeve jammed against my lower A-arm meaning that I couldn't turn my steering wheel right of center.
GRRRR!!!! I really do love my Fords (2000 Exc, 2001 Exp, 2004 Ranger, 1931 Model A hot rod) but I'm sure upset today! Does it show?
Has anyone else with a tie rod failure had any level of sucess getting Ford to pick up the tab? This is a HUGE safety issue, and they know it! I'm saving my receipts in hopes of getting a settlement... but won't hold my breath!
Husband went under to investigate. The sway bar bracket was loose. He tightened it and it worked. Absolutely no more noise. I appreciate everyones advice because it pointed us in the right direction.
Thanks again,
Emily
The bracket is on the frame but will be attached to this link. You can see the 2 bolts on the bottom of the frame that attaches it.
Couldn't find a better pic of the bracket
Thanks Pirate, even though I have basically no clue what to look for I'll see if I notice anything blatantly obvious. If not, I need to take Ex in probably for a rear rotor machining (steering wheel vibrates when braking..we tow a lot) so I can have mechanics look at that time.
Okay, I think I looked at right part, haha. Here are some pics. Also, I felt like noise came from front end but I noticed this in the rear suspension by leaf springs. Please tell me this is normal... Its like that on both sides in rear.
