Just bought the tymar intake from Dale. Have to say I'm pleased with the product. Running 4" Magnaflow and the juice w/ attitude. My question is I love the sound of the turbo now, spools quicker and louder, but after I let off the gas I hear a loud whooosh. Does anybody know what this is, is it bad, and what can I do to fix it? All input is greatly appreciated. thanks
sa far as i know, there nothing wrong with it, just enjoy it the only problem could be your gas bill. your gonna get to likin it and cruisin with the windows down and stomp on it when you can just so you can hear it
on edit: try hookin your 4'' to twin 5'' stacks....talk about a woosh.....
The wooshing sound is built-up boost, then when you let off the throttle, the turbo backs off and cannot maintain the pressure it has built up. The sound you hear is the excess boost bleeding back out through the turbo compressor. And mech2161 is absolutely right - it was always there, but without the stock box, now you get to hear it.
Once you get used to it, it is a very cool sound. No non-turbo engine makes a sound like that - unless it is broken!!!
now, i know it comes out (you ehar it) through the airbox/filer, but i can still hear it scream through my stacks when i throw the clutch in when i'm gettin into it....
I am guessing you have a super duty. 99 or newer. its called turbo surge, and the new trucks do it alot worse then the OBS ones, you will aslo hear it if yopu pull and put it under a pretty good load. a wicked wheel will fix the problem, it also could be the wastegate, but thats not as loud. I can not hear it on either of mine, even when I back out of it at 22 PSI boost.
I don't profess to be an expert on PSDs, as I'm still learning as much as I have the time to learn, but I think this is different than surge. I had a long discussion about this noise with Dale Isley of Tymar. It is completely normal.
This noise occurs not under heavy load, but when letting off the throttle. The sound would definitely be more noticeable for the 99+ trucks because the turbo/intercooler system has a lot more volume to pressurize/de-pressurize than does the non-intercooled pre-99.
This sound occurs because you pressurize the intake with a fast spinning turbo, then let off the throttle. That pressurized air has to go somewhere, and it is easier for it to escape back through a slow spinning turbo than down the more restricted area of the intake ports.
Unless I'm mistaken, the surge you are referring to occurs under heavy load with a modified truck - chip and all, and can be quite damaging if it isn't checked. Most people agree the surge can be pretty much fixed with a a wicked wheel.
The sound of the depressurizing intercooler system when the throttle is chopped won't be affected by the wicked wheel much - if at all.
I talked with a few guys here locally, and they told me that the sound was normal, duh, and that it's ok as long as the sound doesn't start to get choppy when under a heavy load. Well I was doing some hauling this past weekend up some pretty good hills, and noticed a couple of times I would hear it start to spool up nicely, could hear the sucking noise from the intake, then it would start to shudder, and I'd back off of it. Only did two times, but what's the point in having these mods if i have to "get off of it"? Is this turbo surge or something else and what do I do to fix it. I know of the wicked wheel, but also heard something that ATS offers. A bigger turbo exhaust or something? Anyone, help me out here, please. thanks
The sound was always there, you couldn,t hear it with the stock air box. It is normal.
when you hear how LOUD that whooooosh is and you know your truck was making that noise before but you couldn't hear it because it was so muffled... it makes you wonder just how restrictive was that stock air box...?
Overall I love it. Good power, love the digital guages, and easy install. I do notice sometimes I will be accelerating and I will feel it cut out for just a second. I am also throwing a code, but havnt had a chance to have it scanned. I just hate that I spent this money for these power adders, and now I have to spend more to fix the problems that come with them!? I'm still trying to figure out if I need the w/w, or the ATS slotted turbo housing. Does anyone know how hard it is to install the ATS?
From what I've read you don't need to remove the turbo to change compressor housings, but you do have to for the wicked wheel. So although being cheaper the wicked wheel is a little more time consuming and no power gain. The ATS has a 4" inlet so more air is allowed into the turbo. Wish I had about $425 to drop on that baby.
