Engine Cleaning

Here's a question..... How are you guys cleaning up your engine bays? Mine's getting a bit dirty and I'm getting kinda disgusted by it. I hate filthy engine bays. Anyone care to shed some light on the subject? Thanks in advance!!

Good question. The salt here this winter was long and hard on my truck. Under the hood I used GUNK cleaner and power washed everything. Read the material list. Solutions like Simple Green may be to harsh.

I recommend steam as opposed to dumping high pressure water on / in your engine components. I agree that Simple Green can be to aggressive...especially on some of the rubber and plastic products in there.

Cleaning engine compartment

Several years ago a friend of mine and I took his F250 diesel to a professional detailing company and watched as they detailed the engine compartment they used a power washer with a soapy detergent not sure what brand but after pressuring washing the entire underhood area and not covering anything, I did notice they stayed away from the immediate area around throttle sensor and lightly blowing off the excess water they sprayed entire compartment area including metal and rubber with Armorall. I was thinking to myself what a mess...BUT after 10 minutes everything under the hood was shiny and looked brand new. Been doing my own ever since. I use local car wash for power washing and just spray armorall liberally all over..No problems so far..

From: Fort. Lauderdale FL,
I put like plastic shopping bags over the alternator and the cluster of electrical wires on the driver side. Then i spary the whole engine with formula 88 its a cheap de-greaser.. Let it sit for 15 min . Then i pressure wash it clean then i let the truck idle for about 10min to let the fan blow most of the water off. Then i go for like 10 min good ride to let the engine drive itself. Engine comes out bright and clean and well runs great. Been doing it on 2 trucks so far for about 8 years never had a problom..

I use the Castrol Super Clean in a spray bottle. Spray everything (except your AFE Intake- found that out the hard way) Let it sit for about 5 min and rinse with the hose. Looks like it came off the showroom floor.

I removed paint with Castrols Super clean. I like the product but take care where you use it especially aluminum.

Distance and how you power wash is a good idea. When your finished I have tried new products from Meguiars. Armor All over time can attack rubber drying it out as I have used it for sometime.

Well, the manual talks about how to clean the engine...and also specifies some Motorcraft stuff to use: Engine Shampoo and Degreaser. Anyone use it?

now i was told to use armor all - that it worked. and i was also told not to since it creates a static charge and will attract more dust. mine is pretty dirty so i am watching this thread.
