i turn the key, and the dash lights up and fuel pump comes on, but wont start. so i take it apart. well ive figured out that the little 1/4 circle guide that pushes that bar ontop of the steering column is the problem(I'll call it the shaft for short). the 1/4 circle guide moves all the way back but it bends at the point where the 1/4 circle guide connects to the shaft. anyways i know this isnt a great mental picture for you, but i hope it helps. and by the way, ive got it rigged to where i turn my key, and then push a button to start it.
I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. Its actually not an uncommon problem. You will need to remove the steering wheel as I recall and obtain the part from Ford or a salvage yard. It is replacable. I need to check with my brother if you want details on the procedure. He replaced it in his 88 AND his 89 F-250s.
which part do i need to replace? the 1/4 circle piece? i would love some more info from your brother. when he replaced it, did it work like normal again?
The part is called the actuator, it can be purchased at Ford for approx 15.00. It is very common for these to break (cheap pot metal) on the tilt steering column. You will have to pull the wheel, remove the turn signal switch, remove the key cylinder and collar, remove the pivot pins and retaining clip. You will now have access to the actuator. It has been a while since I replaced mine and it sure is nice to have it working again. I still left the push button start switch wired in just in case it happens again.
I have also found these parts in the help section of AutoZone, however I do not trust these parts and the factory part was not too expensive.
