Any of you guys do any online stock trading? Can you recommend to me a good site for this, like Ameriquest or something? Don't worry, not looking to day trade here
For a small(ish) account and frequent trading, Scottrade is tough to beat. Nice people, better customer service. Not a good choice if your looking for professional advice. E*Trade also fits in here, but only for mid-size or larger accounts (fees add up on the smaller accounts). The E offers more services, but customer service can run hot or cold.
If you want every concievable service under one roof (stocks, options, futures, mutual funds), Fidelity is a good choice. If mutual funds are your trading vehicle of choice, TD Waterhouse is especially cost-effective. Both are highly recommended for tax-deferred accounts.
If you want a face to see along with your online account statement, Charles Schwab is the best game in town. Also good if you need professional advice. Merrill Lynch is good if 1) you have a big account and 2) have the right broker and 3) need a multitude of financial services (mortgages, creditlines, etc) Otherwise, their fees will eat you up alive.
Almost like buying a truck, isn't it?
edit: aw crud- the disclaimer, I may have an account at one or more of the brokers mentioned above.

I agree with polarbear. I have been with Schwab for many years and am fully satisfied, but they no longer want small accounts and will fee them to death. Scottrade looks like the best of the online-only, deep-discount brokers. My IRA is with TD Waterhouse.
