Has anyone ever heard of doing this. Seems like there can be some pretty bad side effects unless the flex fuel vehicles are equiped to run acetone much like alcohol. The link below is a study done by a combustion professor. His statements are very interesting and I am wondering if there is any truth to it. I have also heard that acetone is a good ping preventor.
I've done it, for my engine it did give a small increase, large enough it was worth doing, small enough I'm testing a non additive tank of gas to see if basically just cleaned out the engine.
Well I'm in NJ now traveling back to SC with my 4.0 towing a van at the end of the week, I'm going to try it on that trip with the 4.0 and will let ya'll know, the following week I'll be traveling from SC to GA, with the 2.3, twice that week, will try a tank with acetone and one without... will keep 'yous guys' posted
Just what is it that an once or so in 20 gallons might do? If it raises the octane rating it will do nothing. If an once or so WILL do some good why is it that the gasoline companys have not found this out? C'mon guys spend your time on something that even MIGHT make you some money.
Big JIm
One oUnce in 20 gallons could do alot. In the 80's, gas contained only .1 grams of lead per gallon. A tiny amount of acetone present during combustion theoretically could make a difference, at least from what I know from taking chemisty and thermodynamic classes. For example, ever see somebody take a large beaker of liquid X and add 1 drop of liquid Y and the color of the whole mixture changes. Just saying that effects can be seen when changing mixture compositions, even by small amounts.
Ever see some crazy guy with a dirtbike put a drop or 2 of wood alcohol in his gas tank? huge octane boost.
This is my daily driver truck old 91 4.0L 4x4 with a pretty set route 5 days of the week with a few random trips on the weekend.
Full tank no acetone before acetone 236 19 gallons
Full tank with acetone 306.7 miles mixed city/highway (bulk city) (22 gallon tank 19 gallons replaced)
Full tank w/out after using it 276.7 mixed (19.45 gallons replaced)
Well i figured it was worth a try so I went ahead and dumped 2.5 ounces per 10 gallons in my last fill up. Since then I havnt really noticed much driveability difference, but its only been one day. I am going on a fishing trip thursday night and towing my boat so that will be a good test on the performance side. It is also a four hour drive to my camp so ill know what happens to the gas mileage soon. I will let everyone know how it goes when i get back in town.
Okay, back from NJ to SC,with my explorer (4.0l), towing an aerostar... I used 3 oz/10 gallon of acetone in one tank, ran for 250 miles (not to empty) topped off and ran another 225 with out any more acetone.... It looks like I averaged about 18.5 mpg with both tanks. I've got nothing to compare this to since I've never towed with the explorer before. However on a trip from SC to GA I ran 3 oz/10 gallon in my Ranger (2.3l) 230 miles on 9 gallon top off when I got to ATL. 25.5 mpg running +/- 75 mph. Compared to my other runs I gained 1.5 to 2 mpg.... that was an early morning run, I've got an afternoon run coming tomorrow, I'm going to use the entire quart until it runs out. I'm going to alternate acetone / no acetone on fillups.... I'll keep ya posted...
